Sustainable distribution network design for the maintenance components of electric multiple units (EMUs) is critical to reduce the problem of unreasonable resource allocation and capital occupation of high-speed railway (HSR) operations. Motivated by the above analysis, this study investigates the integrated optimization of the location and inventory of EMU maintenance component distributions. Aiming to improve the sustainable operation for high-speed railway, we proposed a corresponding nonlinear mixed-integer programming model to determine the location of the distribution center (DC) for EMU maintenance component delivery, inventory control strategy, and corresponding service level. The above optimization model is solved by an adaptive improved genetic algorithm. The proposed model and algorithm are applied to a real-world case study on China’s EMU maintenance components. The findings show that a higher service level is not better to achieve the lower total cost in the maintenance component distribution network. The ratios of transportation modes are significant to balance the service level and total cost of the EMU distribution network. Furthermore, the unit out-of-stock cost and the service level both show great impacts on the total costs of the EMU distribution system. Finally, there exists an optimal ratio of different transport modes, which ensures the least total cost of the EMU distribution system.

The article describes the ways of industrial development in the era of transition from a linear model of the economy to a circular model, as well as new trends in the development of logistics. It shows the interconnection of processes in production systems, logistics and services, their role in ensuring sustainable green growth. It is shown that by closing the loop of product lifecycles, reverse logistics plays an important role to transitioning to a circular economy. The article presents an example of planning the supply of spare parts when organizing services in foreign markets. Planning is based on multidimensional analysis of failure and modeling data. For this purpose, an information system was developed. The found failure probabilities of units and parts were used to build a model of the reverse logistic chain, within which the parameters of the formation of a reverse flow, differentiated for various operating conditions and vehicle subsystems, were introduced for the first time.

Fault diagnosis for turnouts is crucial to the safety of railways. Existing studies on fault diagnosis depend on human experiences to select reference curves and require fault type information beforehand. Therefore, we proposed a turnout fault diagnosis method, named similarity function and fuzzy c-means based two-stage algorithm to detect faults and identify fault types in real time. First, the reference curve is selected from current curves representing turnout actions by K-means algorithm; then, a similarity function called Fréchet distance is used to distinguish normal and abnormal curves. Second, an improved fuzzy c-means algorithm is employed to cluster curves automatically. To be more specific, it can double-confirm the normal curves recognized in the first step as well as divide the abnormal curves into different types. Furthermore, possible causes for each fault type are inferred according to their curves. Our approach integrates fault detection and fault classification into one model and would better help the diagnosis of turnouts. The analysis results based on the similarity function and fuzzy c-means based two-stage algorithm algorithm indicate that the analyzed turnout fault types can be diagnosed automatically with high accuracy. Furthermore, since the proposed similarity function and fuzzy c-means algorithm does not need to know fault types in advance, it is applicable in identifying new fault types.
