This article examines and interprets the phenomenon of Medjugorje as a new religious phenomenon. The name of this Bosnian-Herzegovinian village not only refers to a long series of Marian apparitions, but it is also used as a metaphor for the religious and political developments that occur in relation to those visions. The argument is that in the context of interaction with nationalist agendas and church politics, Medjugorje must be seen as a contested apparitional site that has reinvented itself into a highly successful grassroots religious movement. Medjugorje devotees and the faithful, inspired by tradition, are creating an idiosyncratic devotional expression of Catholicism, in which the individual endures the hardships of pilgrimage for a personalized experience of charismatic gifts and the miraculous. The article contends that this distinguishes this devotional movement from mainstream Catholic pilgrimage culture.

Un débat important de l'anthropologie religieuse actuelle porte sur l'exceptionnalité supposée du christianisme. « Quelle différence le christianisme fait-il ? » Telle est notamment la question introductive du livre important qu'a dirigé Fenella Cannell (2006) sur la relation de l'anthropologie au christianisme d'une part et sur l'identité de cette religion-là d'autre part. Sa réflexion, féconde, a fait date dans l'histoire de la discipline. D'une certaine manière, le débat concerne le statut que l'individu occupe au sein des sociétés contemporaines et réactualise un hiatus ancien des sciences sociales entre, d'un côté, l'approche durkheimienne conférant une autonomie aux choses sociales indépendamment des individus qui constituent la société et, de l'autre, celle qui veut reconnaitre la primeur de l'individu sans lequel la chose sociale ne pourrait exister 1 . Qu'il soit d'Europe ou d'ailleurs, par rapport à une période historique antérieure -d'ailleurs non nécessairement lointaine -, l'individu aurait donc pris aujourd'hui une place nouvelle au sein de sa société. Toute son existence aurait suivi un processus de « désengoncement » général. Il ne serait plus soumis aux autorités qui naguère l'obligeaient et il pourrait désormais fouler de nouveaux territoires au cours d'un cheminement qui lui serait personnel.
