The relevance of the research undertaken is determined by the insufficient description of the cognitive approach in relation to word formation units, the unjustifiably rare use of word formation data by the conceptology that is actively developing in linguistics, and the need to form semantic-cognitive analysis procedures relevant to the research object to determine the boundaries of complex units of the word-formation level. The article focuses on the philosophical issues of linguistics, in particular word formation. The peculiarity of linguistics at the end of the 20th century, the essence of which is the recognition of the cognitive conditioning of the main linguistic units and structures, is noted. It is noted that the materialization of certain concepts with the help of linguistic means always consists of a certain ordering, systematization, distribution by headings, categorization. The main function of the analysis and classification of derived words is determined not as groups of derived words or a system of derivational types, but the principles of construction and deployment of complex derivational fragments (blocks, rows, fields), taking into account derivational units larger than a word, analytical analogs of derived words, constructions in the derivation function, only way to represent the derivative and its semantics.

Metaphern und ihr persuasives InferenzpotenzialKonzeptualisierungen des islamistischen Terrorismus nach 9/11 im massenmedialen Diskurs 1 Einleitung: Metaphern als persuasive Diskursmittel Metaphern sind die wichtigsten verbalen Mittel, um abstrakte und/oder schwer erfassbare Phänomene und Gegenstandsbereiche (wie kognitive und soziale Prozesse, Emotionen, technische Erneuerungen, Ideologien etc.) verständlich darzustellen und damit kognitiv zugänglich(er) zu machen. Sie helfen, komplexe Sachverhalte und Prozesse besser zu verstehen, indem sie mittels Analogien kognitive Brücken zwischen Konzepten schlagen und dadurch mentale Modelle etablieren. Schwer Begreif-und Verbalisierbares wird mittels metaphorischer Äußerungen (leichter und anschaulicher) kodier-und kommunizierbar. Neben diesen referenziellen und erkenntnisfördernden Funktionen haben Metaphern aber auch persuasive 1 (und manipulative) Funktionen im alltäglichen und massenmedialen Diskurs. Insbesondere im öffentlichen Kommunikationsraum können Metaphern benutzt werden, um Meinungen zu transportieren bzw. zu evozieren, Bewusstseinszustände zu verändern, Einstellungen und Bewertungen zu vermitteln. Mittels metaphorischer Konstruktionen werden perspektivierte Sichtweisen auf Dinge und Sachverhalte der Welt erzeugt. Metaphern spiegeln also nicht nur Konzeptualisierungen wider, sie konstituieren auch spezifische Konzeptualisierungen, die über die jeweilige Semantik der Äußerungen vermittelt werden. Im Rahmen massenmedialer Berichterstattung können die durch sie evozierten Vorstellungsbilder und mentalen Modelle maßgeblichen Einfluss auf kollektive Bewusstseins-und Meinungsbildungsprozesse nehmen und damit auch (aufgrund der engen Wechselwirkung zwischen medial gesteuerten Bewertungskategorien und gesellschaftlichen Einstellungs-und Entscheidungsmustern) sozial-kognitive sowie politische Konsequenzen haben. In a usage-based framework, variation is part and parcel of our linguistic experiences, and therefore also of our mental representations of language. In this article, we bring attention to variation as a source of information. Instead of discarding variation as mere noise, we examine what it can reveal about the representation and use of linguistic knowledge. By means of metalinguistic judgment data, we demonstrate how to quantify and interpret four types of variation: variation across items, participants, time, and methods. The data concern familiarity ratings assigned by 91 native speakers of Dutch to 79 Dutch prepositional phrases such as in de tuin ‘in the garden’ and rond de ingang ‘around the entrance’. Participants performed the judgment task twice within a period of one to two weeks, using either a 7-point Likert scale or a Magnitude Estimation scale. We explicate the principles according to which the different types of variation can be considered information about mental representation, and we show how they can be used to test hypotheses regarding linguistic representations.
