Intranasal budesonide in children affected by persistent allergic rhinitis and its effect on nasal patency and Nasal Obstruction Symptom Evaluation (NOSE) score

Abstract: Intranasal budesonide is effective in increasing nasal patency in children. Moreover the NOSE score was strongly correlated with nasal flow and, hence, this score should be regarded as a valid and reliable instrument in children.

“…The beneficial effects of budesonide on PAR have been demonstrated in clinical studies (5). Accordingly, our results showed a global improvement in T5SS scores, as the result of specific improvement in all the nasal symptoms; in particular, the score relevant to nasal congestion improved significantly more for children in the NB group after the treatment period.…”

“…Previous studies report that nNO is elevated in children with allergic rhinitis (AR) (2), especially in perennial sensitized subjects (3), and that it may be affected by topical administration of intranasal steroids (INSs) (4). Clinical studies reported that intranasal budesonide is effective on AR symptoms (5), whereas no data about its effect on nNO in children with persistent allergic rhinitis (PAR) are available to date.…”

“…However, there is some criticism regarding NOSE, with possible redundancy between items 10,28 . Few studies with children were found 29,30 . One of them, evaluated by NOSE score pre and post septoplasty, has obtained average values of 71.0, 22.6 and 23.7 in baseline, three months and 12 months after surgery, respectively 30 .…”

“…Nasal patency can be evaluated subjectively using symptom severity scales [4][5][6] or objectively using clinical measures [7], such as acoustic rhinometry, a validated noninvasive tool applied to measure the area and volume of the nasal cavity [8]. In children, measurement of volume in the anterior part of the nose has been shown to be sensitive for changes in nasal patency due to changes in mucosal swelling after the nasal provocation test [9] and after decongestion [10].…”
