“…Although there is a high demand for an effective hangover treatment [23], most of the currently marketed hangover treatments lack scientific evidence to support their efficacy. For other compounds that have been evaluated by clinical trials, the effectiveness is normally limited to either mitigating a single hangover symptom or absent completely [24][25][26]. The primary cause for the lack of an effective hangover treatment is the fact that limited investments are made in the development of such treatments, and that the pathology of the alcohol hangover is not yet fully elucidated [25,27,28].…”

“…The most important reason is that drinkers want to both enjoy the drinking occasion and perform optimally the next-morning. Current scientific literature shows that there are no effective hangover treatments available yet [41][42][43]. Only a fraction of the marketed hangover products have been scientifically investigated, and for none of these products is substantial scientific evidence (i.e., randomized controlled trials in human subjects) available that demonstrates their efficacy in treating or preventing alcohol hangover.…”

“…Natural products such as vegetables, fruits, and traditional herbs have been developed as potential treatments for alcohol hangovers based on the findings that they promote the elimination of alcohol and alcohol metabolites, inhibit inflammatory mediators, and stimulate the expression of antioxidant enzymes [ 9 ]. However, they improve some symptoms associated with alcohol hangovers such as fatigue, nausea/vomiting, and gastric pain, but not all [ 10 ]. In addition, these products can cause liver toxicity depending on the individual’s health condition [ 11 ].…”
