Intersectoral flows of technological knowledge in emerging countries: An input-output analysis

Abstract: In this paper, we aim to assess the production, use and diffusion of technology in the production structure in emerging countries, such as Brazil, China, the Russian Federation and South Africa, through the analysis of: (i) users and producers of technology; (ii) research and development (r&d) content in each group of sectors, and (iii) technical knowledge flows between these groups. We use input-output matrices combined with sectoral r&d statistics to achieve our objectives. Our major findings point to signif… Show more

“…A diferencia de Argentina, en todos estos sectores predomina el componente de inversión del propio sector. El sector automotriz canadiense, junto a agricultura, ganadería y pesca, es el único donde el componente importado 26 es mayor al mismo en argentina y, en línea con la trayectoria de tal industria en ese país, donde aparece con mayor importancia el componente importado (69 %).…”

“…They show that transfer via patents is stronger between agents close to the technology frontier with the same absorptive capacity and estimate that firms, which are further to high R&D intensity, receive knowledge transfer mostly from rent spillovers. Gonçalves & B. Ferreira Neto (2016) and Gonçalves, Perobelli, & Araújo (2017) also focus on the importance of indirect knowledge transfer in emerging countries and mediumlevel technology sectors.…”

“…Looking at the influence that networks' structural features have on the transmission process is key to understanding economic development if it is analysed in conjunction with taxonomies that separate sectors according to their technology levels (García Muñiz et al 2010). Interindustrial sales allow sectors to incorporate knowledge embodied in inputs and can help to better understand labour productivity growth (Schmookler 1966, Rosenberg 1982, Gonçalves & Ferreira Neto 2016. This intersectoral transfer of information and technology is a pivotal source of knowledge for the entire economy (Mansfield 1971).…”
