Supportive services for spouses of schizophrenic patients should be offered very closely to the onset of schizophrenia, because the situation is especially burdensome in this period. Interventions should meet the particular needs of spouses. In addition to information about the illness and coping strategies intervention programs should consider issues which are relevant for partnership and parenting roles.
