“…Patarra (2006) points to issues related to human rights and economical‐productive restructuring in a global scale. Family structure, cultural aspects and language can also be a significant factor in the decision to migrate (Bal & Willems, 2014; Bender et al, 2020; Benson, 2012; Bushin, 2009; Halfacree, 2004; Jorgensen et al, 2019; Massey et al, 1993; Ryan & Sales, 2013; Saarela & Finnäs, 2013; Teo, 2003; Thompson, 2017). In addition, other institutional aspects might be especially important, such as permanent resident process, social security and labour guarantees (Bertocchi & Strozzi, 2008; de Jong & de Valk, 2020; Hoon et al, 2020; Nifo & Vecchione, 2014; Ryo, 2013).…”

“…The city of Governador Valadares, located in the inland state of Minas Gerais in southeastern Brazil, has a long‐standing history of emigration to the United States. These transnational links took shape in the late 1970s and 1980s during economic downturn in Brazil and have remained robust until today, making Governador Valadares a particularly productive site to observe migration and transnational family dynamics (see also Jorgensen et al., 2021). Migration from this city is characterized by high levels of irregularity, with significant numbers of young, economically active adults (20–40 years old) braving dangerous crossings through the Mexico–United States border (Siqueira, 2018).…”

“…But why is it important to access the Brazilian case? As it is considered more an emissary than a recipient of immigrants, studies on immigration are generally focused on the historical ow (Lesser, 1999), quality of life and housing of immigrants in Brazil (Jorgensen et al, 2019), and the role of social capital in individual labor incomes (Barros and Mesquita, 2009). Besides, from a geopolitical perspective, traditional receptor regions like the United States and European countries have increased their barriers to the entry of immigrants, especially since 2016 (Center for Migration Studies, 2020), which may lead them to other alternatives and countries (Bertino Moreira, 2017).…”
