International Diffusion of Iso 14000 Certification

Abstract: The ISO 9000 series of quality management systems standards and the more recent ISO 14000 environmental management systems standards have generated much controversy among practitioners. Although ISO 9000 has become a de facto requirement for many firms, its effects are poorly understood, and similarly the value and domain of applicability of ISO 14000 have been questioned. This paper reports on an exploratory study into the global spread of ISO 14000. We interviewed practitioners worldwide to identify factors … Show more

“…Several empirical studies have confirmed the significant role played by exports in firms' decisions to adopt environmental standards (Corbett & Kirsch, 2001;Delmas & Montiel, 2009;Grolleau, Mzoughi, & Pekovic, 2007). Furthermore, export-oriented firms tend to have higher labor productivity in order to compete internationally (Zwick, 2004).…”

“…More specifically, several case studies of ISO 14001 certified companies have shown that implementation of the standard has helped reduce environmental impacts, including the volume of waste generated, water and energy consumption, and atmospheric emissions (Chattopadhyay, 2001;Fielding, 1999). Other studies have emphasized the beneficial effects of the standard on technological innovation, improvements in safety procedures and decreases in the risk of environmental mishaps (Hanna et al, 2000;Shin and Chen, 2000), decrease in the use of raw materials, energy, and costs (Chattopadhyay, 2001;Fielding, 1999;González-Benito and González-Benito, 2005;Shin and Chen, 2000), and improvements in the image of organizations, competitive edge, and response to customer expectations (Corbett and Kirsch, 2001;Goh Eng et al, 2006;Melnyk et al, 2003;Potoski and Prakash, 2005;Pun and Hui, 2001). …”

“…Some of these studies showed that the environmental performance of certified organizations did not exceed that of uncertified organizations, or that the standard implementation resulted in very limited benefits (Barla, 2007;Welch et al, 2003). Other studies showed that certification served primarily as a means to improve company image, respond to stakeholder pressures and bolster the trust of exchange partners (Corbett and Kirsch, 2001;Goh Eng et al, 2006;Jiang and Bansal, 2003;King et al, 2005). This search for institutional legitimacy through ISO certification seems often to be disconnected from the search for environmental performance (Boiral, 2003(Boiral, , 2007Jiang and Bansal, 2003), although this hypothesis remains to be validated.…”

“…Understanding variations in the uptake of CR standards -both across time and space -has spawned a quantitative research literature, which has sought to explain geographic unevenness in terms of spatio-temporal diffusion processes (Albuquerque et al, 2007;Corbett and Kirsch, 2001;Delmas and Montiel, 2008;Neumayer and Perkins, 2004;Potoski and Prakash, 2004;Potoski, 2006, 2007). Our large-N, econometric contribution in the present article advances on this previous work in three important areas.…”
