Interleukin-6 and ratio of plasma interleukin-6/interleukin-10 as risk factors of symptomatic lumbar osteoarthritis

Abstract: AIMTo determine the role of cartilage oligomeric matrix protein (COMP), interleukin (IL)-6, IL-10 and ratio of IL-6/IL-10 as risk factors of symptomatic lumbar osteoarthritis (OA) in postmenopausal women with estrogen deficiency.METHODSCase-control study had been conducted in Sanglah General Hospital from October 2015 until March 2016. The blood samples were obtained and analyzed by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA).RESULTSFrom 44 pairs of samples which divided into 44 samples as case group and 44 samp… Show more

“…Osteoarthritis has been recognized as an inflammatory disease since inflammation is implicated in the osteoarthritis pain process and cartilage degradation process (Berenbaum 2013;Rahmati et al 2016). Many inflammatory cytokines and inflammatory mediators, such as interleukin-1, interleukin-6, and tumor necrosis factor, were involved in the pathophysiology of osteoarthritis (Fernandes et al 2002;Akeson and Malemud 2017;Suyasa et al 2017). Anti-inflammatory proteins were also demonstrated to exhibit a favorable role in the treatment of osteoarthritis (van Drumpt et al 2016;Hix et al 2017;Kon et al 2018).…”

“…Despite being a degeneration process, inflammation also plays a role in OA. The inflammatory development that happens in lumbar osteoarthritis involves the role of proinflammatory cytokines, or anti-inflammatory cytokines [ 2 ], [ 4 ].…”

“…The prevalence of osteoarthritis at the age of 50 years both in men and women is relatively similar and increasing in women of over 50 years old. Numerous causes have been proposed, including estrogen alterations that frequently arise in post menopausal women in post-menopausal age [ 1 ], [ 2 ].…”
