Interlaboratory trial to determine the analytical state-of-the-art of bromate determination in drinking water

Abstract: The new European Directive for water intended for human consumption has established a regulatory level for bromate at 10 microg L(-1). This Maximum Admissible Concentration requires analytical methods with detection limits of a least 2.5 microg L(-1). A project funded by the Standards, Measurements and Testing Programme of the European Commission has enabled the improvement and/or development of methods for the determination of bromate at such concentration levels. This collaborative work was concluded by the … Show more

“…15 According to the WHO and the International Agency for Research on Cancer, bromate has been classified as possibly Group 2B carcinogenic to human beings. 16 Over time, it has been discovered that the toxicity of bromate can cause abdominal pain, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, kidney failure, oligonuria, anuria, deafness, vertigo, hypotension and depression of the central nervous system. 17 Recent studies have indicated that bromate may be presented not only in water, but also in potato snacks, flour, bread and bread additives and in plants.…”

“…Since most herbal teas are normally prepared with water, bromate contamination that results from ozonation, a process used to inactivate pathogens and oxidize organic compounds in drinking water, is rarely considered [16]. The World Health Organization (WHO) and the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) have designated bromate as possibly Group 2B carcinogenic to human beings [17,18]. Some of the reported effects of bromate contamination in human beings include abdominal pain, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, kidney failure, oligonuria, anuria, deafness, vertigo, hypotension, and depression of the central nervous system [19].…”

“…Bromate has been identied as an animal, and possibly human, carcinogen. 3,4 The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) has classied bromate in group B-2 (the agent is possibly carcinogenic for humans).…”
