Interferon lambda 1–3 expression in infants hospitalized for RSV or HRV associated bronchiolitis

Abstract: These findings show that differences in the IFN lambda 1-3 levels in infants with RSV or HRV infections are present and that the expression of IFN lambda 1 correlates with the severity of RSV bronchiolitis.

“…In nasopharyngeal wash samples from infants hospitalized for RSV associated bronchiolitis, IFN-λ expression correlates positively both with anti-viral ISG expression and with the clinical score index of disease severity, but not with viral load. It should be noted however, that type I IFNs were not measured in this study, so it is unclear whether IFN-λ or another IFN was responsible for ISG expression (Selvaggi et al, 2014). …”

“…Recently, a positive correlation was shown for the clinical score index and the levels of IFN-l1 in nasopharyngeal washes from patients with hRSV bronchiolitis [31 ]. Specifically, IFN-l1 seems to be associated with an increase in respiratory rate during hRSV infection [31 ].…”

“…Also, viral loads were higher in IFNAR1 À/À mice as compared to wild type mice [26]. Control of viral infection in AECs is also by the activity of type III IFNs [31 ] upon binding to the receptor expressed on epithelial cells at mucosal surfaces [27,32]. Recently, a positive correlation was shown for the clinical score index and the levels of IFN-l1 in nasopharyngeal washes from patients with hRSV bronchiolitis [31 ].…”

“…Currently, IFN-λ is designated as a therapeutic candidate against the influenza A virus (IAV) infection (32, 33). In infants hospitalized for respiratory syncytial virus (RSV)- or human rhinovirus (HRV)-associated bronchiolitis, RSV elicited higher levels of IFN-λ subtypes when compared with HRV (34). …”
