The rampant growth in penetration of gas-fired distributed units (GFDUs) is recasting the role of the integrated energy service provider (IESP) as a price-maker player. Nevertheless, it is threatening the well-being and reliability of the natural gas networks (NGNs). In this regard, this paper investigates the strategic participation of integrated 20-node NGN and an 33-bus active distribution system (ADS) in the day-ahead wholesale market (WM), which consists of a six-bus transmission network (TN), through a bi-level optimization framework. The upper-level objective is to minimize the operational costs of the IESP as well as the cost of energy that is purchased/sold in day-ahead WM. The lower-level problem models the optimal response of the wholesale market operator (WMO) that has the objective of maximizing social well-fare by clearing the day-ahead wholesale market. To alleviate the NGN's pipeline congestion, the linepack capability of the pipelines is deployed, while demand response program (DRP) and interruptible loads (IL) are integrated into the ADS side. As a computationally efficient method, robust optimization (RO) is utilized to handle the uncertainties. The results emphasize the necessity of integrating NGN into this problem. Eventually, different case studies illustrate the impact of line pack and DRP in reducing market-clearing price.

Demand response (DR) is a flexible way to improve distributed energy resource scheduling. The innovative contribution of this paper is to include complex contracts in the model, which can accommodate the constraints according to the special expectations of each player. Such contracts are included in the optimization of distributed energy resource scheduling to dispatch DR according to the expectations of consumers. Multi-period DR events are considered. In this way, consumers can specify the limits on the time, power, and remuneration regarding participation in DR events, which has not been considered in the literature. The state of the art treats these aspects separately or uses a statistical approach, without providing consumers with options to combine their preferences regarding different aspects of their flexibility deployment. The model has been validated for 218 consumers using several scenarios and different types of distributed generation, showing that it is possible to increase DR with respect to the preferences of consumers.

A multi-energy system (MES) provides greater flexibility for the operation of different energy carriers. It increases the reliability and efficiency of the networks in the presence of renewable energy sources (RESs). Various energy carriers such as power, gas, and heat can be interconnected by energy storage systems (ESSs) and combined heat and power units at different levels (e.g., within a region or a local).Non-coordinated optimization of energy systems at local and regional levels does not verify the whole optimal operation of systems since the systems operate without considering their interactions with each other. One of the most famous sources of flexibility is ESSs. Hence, this paper presents a stochastic decentralized approach to evaluate the impact of ESSs on regional-local MES market-clearing within a bi-level framework. On the regional level, the economic interaction between the electricity and NG systems is carried out by a centralized system operator (CSO). In addition, coordination between various energy carriers is implemented by the energy hub operator at the local level. To ameliorate the flexibility of the natural gas (NG) system in the regional MES, the linepack model of gas pipelines has been considered.
