Interactions Between Type of Instruction and Type of Language Feature: A Meta‐Analysis

Abstract: A meta-analysis was conducted to investigate the effects of explicit and implicit instruction on the acquisition of simple and complex grammatical features in English. The target features in the 41 studies contributing to the meta-analysis were categorized as simple or complex based on the number of criteria applied to arrive at the correct target form (Hulstijn & de Graaff, 1994). The instructional treatments were classified as explicit or implicit following Norris and Ortega (2000). The results indicate larg… Show more

“…However, research in L2 morphosyntax (Spada & Tomita, 2010) has used communicatively free productions in the form of an "activity that calls for unplanned language use directed at fulfilling some communicative purpose" (Ellis, 2002, p. 225). “…Other scholars argued that teaching grammar should not be banned and grammar instruction should be carried out in a way that does not interfere with natural acquisition (Long, 1991). Explicit attention to grammatical form can contribute to spontaneous production as well (Housen, Pierrard & Van Daele, 2005;Sheen, 2005;Pawlak, 2007;Spada & Tomita, 2010;Scheffler, 2012). Scott (1989) drew the similar conclusion about explicit attention in his empirical study that explicitly instructed students outperformed in a grammar test than implicitly instructed ones.…”

“…Nous n'avons pas considéré les études comparatives s'intéressant à la question de l'enseignement explicite ou implicite de la grammaire (Focus on Form, Focus on Forms), cette question ayant déjà été traitée par d'autres (Graham et Perin, 2007 ;Spada et Tomita, 2010), bien que nous réinvestissions la question de l'enseignement explicite et implicite dans notre cadre de référence sur les méthodes inductive et déductive.…”
