Sensitivity of gastrointestinal (GI) tissue to contractile stimuli influences several parameters such as GI transit, nutrient absorption and faecal water content. Smooth muscle, which lines the GI tract, is responsible for the motility and contractile patterns which mix and propel the contents through the various GI compartments.
