Interaction of biofunctionalized gold nanoparticles with model phospholipid membranes

Abstract: The understanding of the interaction of nanoparticles with cell membranes and the penetration of these nanoobjects through cell wall is highly required for their biomedical application. In this work were aimed at the study of the interaction of gold nanoparticles with model phospholipid membranes prepared at the air/water interface in a Langmuir trough. Spherical (10 and 15 nm mean diameter) and rod-like gold (aspect ratio: 2.8) nanoparticles were synthesized and biofunctionalized with L-cysteine and L-glutath… Show more

“…There have only been a small number of studies on interactions between PAMAM dendrimers and Langmuir-monolayer models. However, monolayers have been widely used to explore interactions with other nanoparticles, including gold [101] and silica [102] as well as pharmaceuticals [103].…”

“…Such an approach allows eliminating the water evaporation effect from the Langmuir trough and even small fluctuations of the external conditions, e.g., temperature or humidity, on the time-consuming experiments. The increase of the Δπ value means the insertion of the nanoparticles into the phospholipid monolayer, while its decrease is associated with the condensation of the phospholipid molecules on the nanoparticles due to nanoparticles-phospholipid binding or their extraction from the air-water interface and the subsequent sink into the water subphase [ 49 , 57 , 67 ]. The penetration experiments were performed on the same setup and at the same experimental conditions like it took place in the case of the phospholipid compression on the subphase containing the Fe 3 O 4 -AChit nanoparticles.…”

“…Using similar approaches and characterization techniques to those described above, the results obtained Even in the case of positively-charged NPs, electrostatic repulsion can be overshadowed by the counter ions, and be incorporated into the monolayer establishing hydrophobic interactions with the alkyl chains of the lipid and those of the capping agent and/or surfactant [270].…”
