Intelligent Road Construction Site - Development of Automation into Total Working Process of Finnish Road Construction

Abstract: Numeric road construction processes and their parts are today developed worldwide. This paper describes research in Finland, which is conducted with companies using national technology funding in a research and development project entitled "Intelligent Road Construction Site". In its entirety, four public research projects and two product development projects are today ongoing. One development project has already been completed, producing a Finnish version of an automated 3-D blade control system of road grade… Show more

“…Functionally-assisted control systems have been developed to manipulate grader blades to improve the productivity and efficiency of graders. In [66], a blade control system implemented on a grader for driver-assisted operations in automated road construction, where the 3-D location and position of the blade were continuously measured by a tachometer and several position sensors. Measured data were then compared with a 3-D road geometry model.…”

“…GIS is an effective tool for asset management because of its ability to integrate spatial and non-spatial data in a centralized database platform with real world geographical coordinates [22]. With the advent of global positioning systems (GPS) and more modern global navigation satellite systems (GNSS), GIS technology has advanced exponentially and is now being used in a plethora of contexts including educational training, AR, and various scientific disciplines [21,[32][33][34][35][36][37]. GPS and GNSS are systems of geosynchronous satellites that orbit the Earth, providing location and time information to millions of users spread across the globe.…”

“…Many utility owners have switched from computer-aided drafting (CAD) systems to more robust GIS for the creation, storage, and management of their utility information [37]. For example, GIS allows utility owners to have their complete asset inventory archived in a single repository for data extraction, visualization, analysis, and updating information [3].…”
