Intelligent construction: unlocking opportunities for the digital transformation of China's construction industry

Abstract: PurposeThe existing literature has been mainly focused on local problems but without an overall framework for studying the top-level planning of intelligent construction from a systematic perspective. The purpose of this paper is to fill this gap.Design/methodology/approachThis research adopts a deductive research approach.FindingsThis research proposes a reference architecture and related business scenario framework for intelligent construction based on the existing theory and industrial practice.Originality/… Show more

“…In general, companies with higher levels of digital technology usage possess a better technological foundation for digital transformation and are more likely to accept and implement digitalization. Despite the fact that digital technologies such as BIM [34], the Internet of Things [11], big data [35], social media [18], and network security technology [36] have played important roles in promoting digital transformation in enterprises [17], the utilization of digital technology in the construction industry is still relatively low, and it has not fundamentally changed the production mode of engineering projects [1]. This hinders construction enterprises from digital transformation, and traditional construction industry is still considered a "blind spot" in digital transformation.…”

“…In addition, construction enterprises also face the dilemma of a slowdown in industry growth, declining profits, increasing competition, insufficient attractiveness to new employees, exacerbation of aging of the workforce, and a lack of digital professionals [1]. Traditional production and operation models can no longer meet the requirements of intelligent construction under digitalization [17]. Therefore, accelerating the promotion of digital transformation is also an inevitable requirement for construction enterprises to transform their production and operation methods, improve construction project efficiency, enhance core competitiveness, optimize the structure of the construction industry, and achieve sustainable and high-quality development.…”

“…Especially under the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, the traditional construction industry model has been unable to meet the need for high-quality sustainable development in the construction industry [5][6][7]. Construction digitalization provides an opportunity for development and is becoming an important force driving the transformation and upgrading of the construction industry [8,9].…”

“…On the basis of realizing the digitalization of engineering element resources through standardized modeling, networked interaction, visual cognition, high-performance computing, and intelligent decision support, the integrated integration and efficient collaboration of project planning, planning and design, construction (processing) production, and operation and maintenance services driven by the digital chain are realized. People-oriented and intelligent green and sustainable engineering products and services are delivered [2] . Intelligent construction should focus on the development of engineering software for the integration of the whole industry chain, engineering the Internet of Things for intelligent construction sites, intelligent construction machinery for human-machine integration, engineering big data for intelligent decisionmaking and other fields of technology to support the whole process, all elements, all participants in the whole process of engineering construction and industrial transformation [3] .…”
