This study aimed to characterize the liver histology and histomorphometry in sorubim hybrid of different categories (nursery, growth and grow-out) reared on fish farming. The categories were defined considering body weight (BW): nursery category (n = 5): BW = 37.06 AE 6.00 g (31.6-45.3 g); growth category (n = 5): BW = 310.40 AE 53.80 g (242.1-376.4 g) and grow-out category (n = 5): BW = 874.28 AE 27.59 g (846.2-913.1 g). Liver fragments were processed to paraffin inclusion, and sections were stained by haematoxylin and eosin (H&E), PAS (Periodic Acid Schiff) and Perl's staining to histology, histomorphometry and density volumetric of liver structures; glycogen analysis and to detect ferric irons (Fe 3+ ) respectively. The hepatosomatic index decreased between the categories (P < 0.01). The percentage of PAS-positive hepatocytes in the nursery category was higher (P < 0.05) in relation to the growth and grow-out categories. The hepatocytes from all fish were positive to Perl's staining. The density volumetric of liver structures did not differ among categories except to blood vessels were higher (P < 0.01) in the nursery and growth. The area (lm 2 ) and perimeter (lm) of hepatocytes, and the area (lm 2 ), perimeter (lm) and volume (lm 3 ) of the nuclei from grow-out fish were lower (P < 0.01) than those from the nursery and growth categories. Changes in morphometric characteristics of hepatocytes may result from metabolic changes associated with body growth surubins; therefore, these morphometric characteristics of liver tissue can be used as functional biomarkers for the assessment of fish health and nutrition status.

Appropriate supplementary feeding is of increasing importance in common carpCyprinus carpio pond aquaculture, not only with respect to production issues but also as a sustainable tool for maintaining environmental quality. We studied the effect of different supplementary feeding regimes (no supplemental feed, cereal grains, pelleted feed, pelleted feed with lowered phosphorus content, and extruded feed) on growth performance, water quality, natural food availability, phosphorus budget, fish body composition and economic performance in 10 experimental ponds stocked with 3 yr old carp at a density of 363 fish ha −1 over a 4 mo period. The type of supplementary feed had no significant influence on water variables, with the exception of lowphosphorus pelleted feed which increased conductivity (p < 0.05). No significant differences were observed in zooplankton density. Harvested fish had significantly (p < 0.05) higher dry matter content and considerably higher phosphorus content under all treatments compared with fish at the beginning of the experiment. The use of cereals and extruded feed improved carp growth, while the physical qualities of the feed (higher resistance to nutrient leaching) resulted in lower nutrient concentrations in effluent water. Profitability was increased with application of cereal grains and decreased with all pelleted and extruded feeds. Hence, the use of cereal grain feed generated higher economic and environmental benefits than selected pelleted and extruded feed.

Fish are the most commonly cultivated vertebrates in the world. They respond to stress like other vertebrates, and they can feel pain, fear and suffering. These facts are the basis for considering their welfare. The question of formal protection of fish welfare is becoming more relevant with the significant development of aquaculture in the last few decades. However, fish welfare protection is encountering difficulties. Like many terrestrial farm animals, farmed fish are often subjected to poor living conditions and cruelty. Harvesting, transport, and stunning and killing are the most significant welfare issues. This review describes some of the most important procedures that compromise animal welfare during fish farming and the negative effects these procedures have on the fish. It also gives a brief overview of the situation in Serbia in terms of research into fish welfare, public attitudes on this issue, and the state of legislation. Data presented in this paper indicate the need for more effective protection of fish welfare in the legal and executive aspects.
