This study aimed to characterize the liver histology and histomorphometry in sorubim hybrid of different categories (nursery, growth and grow-out) reared on fish farming. The categories were defined considering body weight (BW): nursery category (n = 5): BW = 37.06 AE 6.00 g (31.6-45.3 g); growth category (n = 5): BW = 310.40 AE 53.80 g (242.1-376.4 g) and grow-out category (n = 5): BW = 874.28 AE 27.59 g (846.2-913.1 g). Liver fragments were processed to paraffin inclusion, and sections were stained by haematoxylin and eosin (H&E), PAS (Periodic Acid Schiff) and Perl's staining to histology, histomorphometry and density volumetric of liver structures; glycogen analysis and to detect ferric irons (Fe 3+ ) respectively. The hepatosomatic index decreased between the categories (P < 0.01). The percentage of PAS-positive hepatocytes in the nursery category was higher (P < 0.05) in relation to the growth and grow-out categories. The hepatocytes from all fish were positive to Perl's staining. The density volumetric of liver structures did not differ among categories except to blood vessels were higher (P < 0.01) in the nursery and growth. The area (lm 2 ) and perimeter (lm) of hepatocytes, and the area (lm 2 ), perimeter (lm) and volume (lm 3 ) of the nuclei from grow-out fish were lower (P < 0.01) than those from the nursery and growth categories. Changes in morphometric characteristics of hepatocytes may result from metabolic changes associated with body growth surubins; therefore, these morphometric characteristics of liver tissue can be used as functional biomarkers for the assessment of fish health and nutrition status.

This study assesses the respiratory dynamics related to stress parameters and resting time before slaughter, in the quality of surubim (Pseudopatystoma spp.) fillets. A completely randomized design was conducted using five treatments: resting time before slaughter of 0, 2, 4, 8 and 24 hours, with 15 fish sampled per treatment. Time 0 corresponded to the treatment without resting time, where the fish were slaughtered immediately after arriving at the processing plant. The resting time did not affect the electrolyte balance, hemoglobin, plasma, hepatic glycogen, myofibrillar fragmentation index (MFI) and water holding capacity (WHC) of surubins. However, with increased resting time, there was a significant decrease in muscle glycogen and an increase in blood pH and blood bicarbonate levels. Additionally, respiratory parameters showed an increase in pO 2 and, consequently, in O 2 saturation and a decrease in pCO 2 .The hematocrit and MCV values of the surubins after 24 hours of resting decreased significantly. In the first hours of resting, the highest values of erythrocytes and CHCM were observed. The lowest level of stress was observed for fish having 24 hours of resting. Fish having longer resting periods (8 and 24 hours) presented fillets with a higher pH (P <0.05) and the rigor mortis establishment time was shorter for the first 2 hours and 24 hours of resting time. There was a linear decrease in fillet lightness and an increase in the intensity of red (CIE a*) color up to 24 hours when resting was increased. In CIE b*, a linear decrease (P <0.05) of the yellow intensity of the fillets was observed as the surubim resting time increased. A resting time of 4 to 8 hours before slaughter is effective in reestablishing homeostasis after transporting surubim, providing fillets with higher quality and a greater length of the pre-rigor mortis period.

The aim of this study was to determine the morphometric measures and morphological aspects of nematode-cysts in Gymnotus inaequilabiatus, and the presence of melanomacrophage centers (MMCs) associated with the periphery of cysts and in the liver parenchyma. Adult specimens, 34 female (123.1 ± 43.9g) and 45 male (135.5 ± 43.4g), from Paraguay River, Corumbá, Brazil, were used. The number of nematode-cysts was determined in 79 livers and 25 of them randomly selected for histopathological analysis and morphometric measures of nematode-cysts (mean diameter, thickness of collagen layer, and cyst-wall layer). The percentage of cysts with MMCs on the periphery and density in the liver parenchyma was estimated. The average number of macroscopic cysts was of 48.7 ± 2.78. Granulomatous reaction was observed surrounding the cysts. Diameter, collagen layer and cyst-wall measurements were 293.0 ± 75.18 (µm), 17.72 ± 6.01 (µm) and 12.21 ± 9.51 (µm), respectively. The number of nematode-cysts was correlated with hepatosomatic index, (r=0.26, P<0.05). Collagen layer was correlated with cyst diameter (r=0.62, P<0.01). Pericystic and parenchymatous MMCs were moderately (r=0.48) and highly (r=0.90) correlated with nematode-cysts number. Morphological characteristics of hepatic tissue and cysts-nematodes measures suggest that G. inaequilabiatus acts as a paratenic host to nematodes in the larval stage.Keywords: Brevimulticaecum sp., Gymnotiformes, nematoda, melanomacrophages. O número de cistos foi associado ao índice hepatossomático, (r=0,26, P <0,05). A camada de colágeno correlacionou-se com o diâmetro do cisto (r=0,62, P <0,01). CMMs pericísticos e do parênquima apresentaram correlação moderada (r=0,48) e alta (r=0,90) com o número de cistos, respectivamente. ResumoO crescimento dos peixes é um fator importante e que determina o potencial das várias espécies para a exploração econômica. Objetivou-se avaliar o crescimento de juvenis de cachara e de híbrido cultivados em viveiro. Informações de peso e das medidas morfométricas foram coletadas durante o período experimental. Foram calculados o ganho de comprimento total, ganhos de altura e largura do corpo, ganho de peso, índice de crescimento, as razões morfométricas e o percentual do corpo. Utilizou-se a metodologia de modelos lineares generalizados, considerando a distribuição Gamma e função de ligação inversa. As variâncias e médias das variáveis foram submetidas aos testes F de Snedecor e Qui-quadrado, respectivamente. Os híbridos obtiveram maior peso na segunda e terceira biometrias, além de apresentarem maior ganho de comprimento total e percentagem de corpo. O tamanho e a largura da cabeça dos cacharas foram maiores nas três biometrias. As variâncias dos híbridos foram maiores na segunda e terceira biometrias. Os híbridos apresentaram melhor desempenho, porém menor padronização para as características avaliadas que a espécie pura, confirmando a necessidade do desenvolvimento de um programa de melhoramento genético que realize a seleção da espécie pura para incremento da produção comercial. The aim this work was evaluates the growth juvenile cachara and hybrid grown in pond. Information was collected of weight and morphometric measures during the experimental period. Total length gain, body height gain, body width gain, weight gain, growth index, morphometric ratios and body percentage were calculated. The methodology of generalized linear models was used, considering Gamma distribution and inverse link function. The variances and averages of variables were submitted tests F of the Snedecor and Chi-Square, respectively. The hybrids gained more weight in second and
