Integrating media clusters and value networks: Insights for management theory and research from a case study of Mediapolis in Finland

Abstract: We argue that there is scholarly potential in linking theory on industry clusters with theory on value networks. To date, these two theoretical streams have developed largely in parallel, limiting understanding of how the two are integrated in practice. By considering these theories in combination and the unique context of creative industries, we generate insight on the management of clusters as value networks. Our ongoing longitudinal empirical case is a new media cluster called ‘Mediapolis’ in the city of Ta… Show more

“…Despite the vast literature on creative cities, there is a lack of studies showing the measurement of cities' performance, more precisely in the dimension of creativity. Indeed, it is important to understand how the creative economy contributes to sustainable urban development [17]; to study the contribution of industries, by typology, to entrepreneurship in cities in the current urban context [18]; and to show the relevance of cities' contextual characteristics in the formation of creative industry networks [19]. Another gap identified concerns the need to carry out studies measuring cities' performance with a high number of variables and for large samples [20].…”

“…First, the two papers and the different literature make this study understand that much research has been done on the case study design method. However, the confusion on when to describe a study multiple or single case study remains unattended (Castles, 1996;Driver & Halligan, 1991;Virta & Lowe, 2017;Mckenna et al, 1978;Flyvbjerg, 2006). This understanding emanated from these authors' (Eisenhardt, 1991;Dyer & Wilkins, 1991) propositions, which inspired this study.…”

“…Within this context, the importance of locality and spatiality has received a lot of attention (Cohendet et al, 2010;Drake, 2003;Lazzeretti et al, 2008;Rekers, 2016;Virta and Lowe, 2017), and not without a reason: as the outputs in the creative industry are based on individuals' creative talents and skills (Hirsch, 1972), such creative talents and skills often relate to the spatio-temporal spaces in terms of their manifestation (Godart, 2015;Lee, 2015).…”
