Categorization of case in case study research method: new approach

Abstract: This study was inspired by two of the leading papers in the case study method: Eisenhardt (1991) and Dyer and Wilkins (1991). The work of those authors could be considered a benchmark for research based on a case study. Additionally, this research comes as a complement to re-categorize case study research design. After reviewing those papers, the authors identified certain misunderstandings relative to when a case study should be addressed as single or multiple case studies. This study reviewed both recent and… Show more

“…In accordance with the purposive sampling approach for the identification and selection of information-rich cases with the most effective use of limited resources (Patton, 2002), the criterion of selecting only universities was adopted. This selection was made because it satisfied the following criteria: (1) Universities stated their availability, interest, cooperation and access to required information, which are necessary requirements to participate in this kind of research (Palinkas et al, 2015); (2) In the multiple-case study method, the cases need to have a standard variable, for example a set of companies in the same industry (Diop and Liu, 2020). In this case, the three case studies belong to the same business activity: the research and education field; (3) Proposed theoretical model application to these universities had the potential capacity to generate the necessary enhancement of the basic theory, which is another necessary requirement (Crowe et al, 2011); (4) Homogeneous and typical case sampling, like the one used in this study offer greater depth in the findings.…”

“…Jelen cikk az esettanulmány módszerén alapul, leírva a kutatás tárgyához kapcsolódó klímavédelmi, kibocsátás csökkentési, fenntarthatósági döntéseket, kihívásokat, lehetőségeket, melyekkel a légi közlekedési iparág szembesül. Az esettanulmány egy kvalitatív kutatási módszer (a vizsgálat tárgyának mélyreható elemzésére összpontosító kutatás, ahelyett, hogy statisztikákat használna általános következtetések levonására), inkább segít megérteni a folyamatokat, és a köztük lévő összefüggéseket, azaz lényegében egy valós esemény szimulációja (Rashid et al 2019;Diop and Liu 2020). Az esetmódszer kutatási megközelítése a különböző tényezők közötti kapcsolatot leíró esettanulmányokra (case study) alapoz (Yin, 2003).…”

“…Az út Japán és Hawaii közötti szakaszában André Borschberg megdöntötte a leszállás nélküli leghosszabb szóló repülés rekordját (117 óra 52 perc), Bertrand Piccard pedig elsőként repülte át az Atlanti-óceánt napelemes repülőgéppel (Haas 2018). A Föld körberepülésére tett kísérlete során a Solar Impulse-nak számos kihívással kellett megküzdenie, mint például a napelemek energiatermelésének maximalizálása, a megújuló energia integrálása a villamosenergia-elosztó rendszerekbe és az energiahatékonyság javítása 11 . A Solar Impulse 2 négy lítium-polimer akkumulátorral működik, mindegyik 38,5 kilowatt per órás teljesítménnyelígy összesen 154 kilowatt per órás akkumulátorteljesítménnyel repül a gép.…”

“…We are interested in observing various formats of public education policies for sustainable development used by cities. We are interested in an approach based on its global nature and general impact on citizens, and we need to select more than one case for study because this highlights the importance of the diversity of contexts in applying shared public policy principles, increases the epistemological value of the results that can be obtained from the comparison between the emerging data and allows the researcher to analyze the data under one circumstance and through various situations [33].…”
