Integrated taxonomy unveils three new species of Foenobethylus (Hymenoptera, Bethylidae) from China

Abstract: Species of the genus Foenobethylus Kieffer, 1913 are parasitoids wasps rarely collected and are only found in the Oriental region. In this study, based on both morphological and molecular evidence, we describe three new species from China: F. robusta Li & Chen, sp. nov., F. xinglongsensis Wang & Chen, sp. nov., and F. yunkaishanensis Chen & Luo, sp. nov. An updated key to species of the genus is provided. Additionally, the phylogenetic relationships between Foenobethylus and other three… Show more

“…The presence of three distal hamuli is common within the Bethylidae (e.g., Scleroderminae: [35]; Laelius: [39]; Afrobethylus Ramos and Azevedo, 2016: [40]; Mesitiinae: [41]). The presence of proximal hamuli, and moreover in a group of three, is less frequent [42,43], reported only for three species, one in the Mesitiinae, i.e., Hadesmesitius simplicitus (Barbosa and Azevedo, 2011), and two in the Pristocerinae, i.e., Apenesia sahyadrica Azevedo and Waichert, 2006 [41] and Pseudisobrachium somaliense Benoit, 1957 (M. Brazidec pers. obs.).…”

In a paper about three new species of Foenobethylus (Bethylidae) (Li et al 2022), the new name Foenobethylus robusta Li & Chen, 2022, was erroneously coined. Foenobethylus is undoubtedly of masculine gender, so the adjectival species name should be Foenobethylus robustus.
