The objective of the present study is to evaluate, determine, and apply alternatives for improving the quality of the process and the product, with an emphasis on sustainable practices, using an integrated multi-criteria method. For this purpose, an analysis was conducted at a chain of bakeries, aiming to highlight bottlenecks in the production process and in the product. With the support of a literature review, four criteria and seven alternatives were defined to overcome these bottlenecks and, at the same time, contribute to the sustainability of the organization. For data analysis, six decision makers were interviewed and, following their evaluations, an integrated method based on fuzzy AHP and fuzzy TOPSIS was created. The fuzzy AHP was adopted to establish the importance of the criteria, while the fuzzy TOPSIS was used to evaluate and classify the alternatives developed to bypass the bottlenecks. The results revealed that of the criteria, Criterion "Cr1 -Quality" was prioritized. On the other hand, the alternative with the best performance was "A3 -Physical Layout Reorganization". Applying this alternative, the study demonstrates the results achieved such as reduction of errors and accident risks, as well as greater fluidity in the productive space. the present study also makes theoretical and managerial contributions to the field, bringing the theory closer to the reality of companies that operate in the food sector. This paper outlines on the preliminary outcomes of pilot project aimed at exploring the issue related to managing of maintenance activity in the Malaysian Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs). SMEs have been accepted as vital components of domestic industry development in many countries. However, the literature portrays that many of Malaysian SMEs particularly the companies involved in manufacturing, fabrication and machining services are struggling to manage the maintenance of their manufacturing equipment. Dependable manufacturing equipment is important factor towards organizational profitability. Managing the maintenance activity of those manufacturing equipment nowadays, is becoming more challenging due to automation and computerization. Due to such issues, SMEs companies are under stiff pressure to minimize lost time for their survival. Thus, this study seeks to explore the related issues towards further improvements. Qualitative research methodology was adopted in the study. Data were collected at eight (8) SMEs located in three (3) different areas, namely southern, central and eastern region of peninsular Malaysia. Information was gathered from semi-structured interviews with SMEs management and observations focuses on different areas of maintenance management at the respective SMEs. The main concern is to validate the critical success factors (CSFs) in managing the maintenance activity at selected SMEs. This study discovered that nine (9) CSFs are having the most significant impact towards improving the maintenance management practice for SMEs. These include: understanding the MM philosophy; management commitment and leadership; maintenance strategy; maintenance planning; maintenance training; monitoring and assessment; appropriate number of maintenance staff; integration of tools, techniques and technology, and; record of maintenance data. All those CSFs construct are integrated in a simple yet self-explanatory MM Framework to convey the conceptual idea of MM implementation program to the management and technical people within SMEs. It is believed that the MM Framework developed would serve as an indicator of company’s MM focus level. Through the identification of the CSFs constructs, the SMEs can utilize the information to improve their approach in systematic MM program. In the garment industry, reducing machine breakdowns is essential because it has a direct impact on production hours, customer orders, and financial losses. In order to reduce downtime and increase operational effectiveness in the garment industry, the DMAIC (Define, Measure, Analysis, Improvement, and Control) approach is the main topic of this research paper. The study starts with a thorough review of the literature, examining various downtime minimization strategies applied in various industrial industries. The importance of downtime reduction in increasing output, reducing costs, and improving overall corporate performance is emphasized. The study emphasizes the value of scheduled, corrective, and preventive maintenance to find and fix any problems before they cause breakdowns. The article offers insights into effective tactics like preventative maintenance, condition-based monitoring, and efficient scheduling, and data-driven approaches using machine learning algorithms and real-time monitoring. The research paper also includes a case study of how the DMAIC methodology was used in the real-world textile industry to drastically minimize downtime. The DMAIC strategy consists of five phases: defining the issue and project goal, assessing the existing situation, investigating the underlying reasons, putting improvement strategies into practise, and setting up controls to maintain the gains. The study prioritises the primary causes of machine failure time, identifies the causes, and suggests remedies such worker training, providing workers with the ability to change needles, putting preventive maintenance in place, and applying standard operating procedures.
