Integral approach to assessing the criticality of railway infrastructure elements

Abstract: In the last ten years, considerable attention has been paid to analysing and assessing the criticality of railway infrastructure elements. Publications on the subject mostly assess elements only from a certain point of view, such as purpose, reliability or risk. This leads to only a partial assessment of criticality without continuous correlation, which may result some critical elements of the system being omitted. The article introduces the railway infrastructure criticality assessment tool (RICA tool), which… Show more

“…The standardised weights of the parameters were determined using the pairwise comparison method [61] and are presented in Table 1. In this context, it is worth noting that the current way of calculating individual variables does not take into account the changing nature of a CI element, i.e., whether it is a point, areal or line element [62,63]. The resulting level of CIE resistance is expressed by the weighted average of the individual variables (see Equation ( 2)):…”

“…Experiments carried out on a larger number of vehicles, reflecting the individual types of vehicles, as well as roads, with emphasis on critical transport infrastructure, including other types of transportation (e.g., railway), will be the subject of further research [46,47].…”

“…Specifically, it is a soft target in the transportation category and interchange sub-category [58]. This element was chosen based on its significance, scope, purpose, reliability and assessment of its critical nature [58][59]. This element is interconnected with other systems.…”
