“…These anthraquinone derivatives are well known to exhibit a variety of biological activities, such as antibacterial and antifungal [37], antitumor [38], antioxidant [39], cytotoxic and hypoglycaemic activities [40,41]. Other chemicals contained in the plant include saponin, which acts as a laxative and expels intestinal parasites.…”

“…On the other hand, however, rhaponticin, which is very similar in structure to desoxyrhaponticin, is almost devoid of such inhibitory activities. Interestingly, rhaponticin was also reported not to be capable of inhibiting ␣-glucoamylase activity (Choi et al, 2006). This indicates that a subtle difference in structure between desoxyrhaponticin and rhaponticin (which has an additional hydroxyl group compared with desoxyrhaponticin) is critical for their huge differences in bioactivities.…”

“…These include rhaponticim, rhapontigenin, desoxyrhapontigenin, and desoxyrhaponticin. Recent studies have also indicated the possible antidiabetic actions of the extracts and constituents of rhubarb (Babu et al, 2004;Choi et al, 2005Choi et al, , 2006.…”

“…Ten to twelve days after the initiation of differentiation, the insulin-stimulated glucose uptake was analyzed by measuring the uptake of 2-deoxy-D- [ 3 H] glucose in 3T3-L1 adipocytes. 17) Briefly, the adipocytes in 12-well plates were pre-incubated at 37 C for 8 h with lowglucose Dulbecco's modified Eagle's medium (DMEM; Invitrogen, Carlsbad, CA, USA) containing 2 or 20 mM ginsenosides. At the end of the incubation period, the medium was replaced by a Krebs-Ringer-Hepes buffer containing the respective drugs and 0.2 or 10 nm insulin and left at 37 C for 10 min.…”
