Insulin Resistance and Angiotensin Converting Enzyme Polymorphism in Japanese Hypertensive Subjects.

Abstract: Renin-angiotensin system activity has been shown to affect insulin sensitivity. However, the relationship between I/D polymorphism and insulin resistance is controversial. Therefore, we examined the relationship between the ACE genotype and insulin sensitivity in 51 Japanese hypertensive patients using the glucose clamp technique. The ACE genotype distribution in the hypertensive subjects was: 7 subjects with DD, 20 subjects with ID, and 24 subjects with II. Insulin sensitivity in terms of the glucose disposal… Show more

“…Restenosis after conventional balloon angioplasty is caused not only by activation of the RAS, but also by complex factors including elastic recoil, platelet deposition, and thrombus formation. 18,19 Restenosis after stent implantation, however, is predominantly associated with activation of the RAS. 11 Our results show that during the follow-up, the decrease of the MLD and the increase of late loss of stented lesions in patients with the DD genotype significantly differed from those in patients with the other genotypes.…”

“…30,31 In contrast, it is probable that insulin sensitivity is impaired in those with ACE DD genotype in Japanese hypertensive subjects. 32 We did not examine serum ACE activity in this study. PRA is unlikely to be correlated with serum ACE activity.…”

“…Blood glucose was determined every 5 min with a glucose meter (Antsense II; Daikin, Osaka, Japan) and 10% glucose was infused to maintain the fasting blood glucose level. As insulin was infused in exactly the same way using the same insulin infusate and the same infusion pump, data obtained by the two glucose clamp methods were treated together in the results as previously (14). In 4 of the cases, the glucose infusion rate had increased to 8 mg/kg min by 30 min after the start of the glucose clamp.…”
