Injection Versus Medialization Laryngoplasty for the Treatment of Unilateral Vocal Fold Paralysis

“…In fact, the degree of treatment response captured by the VHI and V-RQOL was comparable with that reported for the correction of UVFP. 15,16 Although these instruments were responsive to the effects of Botox therapy in ADSD, they have limitations. A recent systematic review studied all V-RQOL instruments using the scientific advisory committee of the Medical Outcome Trust guidelines.…”

“…Thus, in most cases of UVFP, the vocal fold is seen to be flaccid and arched as a consequence of atrophy of the thyroarytenoid muscle, altering the free margin of the vocal fold. 11,12 Many medical techniques have developed to restore the function of the paralyzed vocal fold in patients with UVFP by ensuring its medialization, but there is no evidence of greater efficacy between the surgical techniques of type I thyroplasty and endoscopic injection [13][14][15] because both provide improved glottal closure and voice in individuals with UVFP. However, there are no studies in the literature that analyze the effect of the medialization techniques in relation to supraglottal adjustments.…”

“…The advantages and disadvantages of these techniques continue to be actively debated. Unfortunately, there are very few direct comparisons in outcomes between these various techniques [9][10][11][12][13]. Therefore, the otolaryngologist must base treatment decisions on experience and judgment of the advantages and disadvantages of the different procedures.…”
