Injectable and Self‐Healing Hydrogel with Anti‐Bacterial and Anti‐Inflammatory Properties for Acute Bacterial Rhinosinusitis with Micro Invasive Treatment

Abstract: Systemic antibiotic therapy is the main treatment for acute bacterial rhinosinusitis (ABRS). However, this treatment often causes side effects of dizziness, diarrhea, and drug resistance. In this study, a new polyethylene glycol hydrogel (PEG-H) treatment model is developed to achieve sustained release of drugs at the locality while avoiding those adverse effects. The PEG-H is composed of 4-arm-PEG-SH and silver ions through a high affinity and dynamic reversible coordination bond between the thiol and silver … Show more

“…Therefore, this is also a good model reference for bone repair after maxillofacial tumour treatment. In addition to these materials, hydrogels with multiple functions (including anti-inflammatory effects 132 , antibacterial effects 133 , tumour treatment 134 , tissue repair 135 , etc.) have long been applied, and injectable hydrogels have to potential to reach the targeted area without surgical harm.…”

“…The hydrogel is formed through a high affinity and dynamic reversible coordination bond between the thiol group of 4-arm-PEG-SH and silver ions. Moreover, in vivo studies indicate that the hydrogels not only play an effective role as an anti-bacterial, but also inhibits the inflammatory response of local sinus mucosa both in a single or combined load [158].…”

“…Chen et al proposed an injectable self-healing PEG thiolated hydrogel for sustained release clarithromycin (CAM) and budesonide (BUD) in rabbit models of acute bacterial rhinosinusitis (ABRS) with Staphylococcus Pneumonia , which during two weeks indicated a therapeutic effect. The injectable self-healing capability PEG hydrogel depends on the high affinity, and reversible binding between sulfhydryl groups and silver ions give rise to control release drugs without adverse side-effects as well as inhibition inflammatory responses [ 117 ]. Additionally, injectable smart hydrogels based on poly (ε-caprolactone- co -lactide)ester-functionalized hyaluronic acid (HA-PCLA) for delivery immunomodulatory factor (OVA expressing plasmid, pOVA) could induce production antibody and effective inhibition of human lung carcinoma in vivo [ 118 ].…”
