“…However, they are typical for Taxus gymnosperm PMI-FAs [23]. Several pharmacological effects, e.g., modulation of immune response, suppression of hypertension, hyperlipidemia and enhancement of memory acquisition in the central nervous system, were reported for oils derived from conifer seeds containing PMI-FAs [24]. Recent studies on animal models and cell lines showed that the juniperonic acid (20:4∆5,11,14,17) exerted anti-inflammatory effects [25].…”

“…The plant exhibits a broad variety of biological activities: anti-plasmodial (Asili et al, 2004), platelet activating factor (PAF) receptor binding antagonistic (Yang et al, 1995), improvements for impaired memory acquisition (Nishiyama et al, 1995), hypouricemic effect (Zhu et al, 2004), fungitoxic (Guleria et al, 2008), molluscicidal (Singh and Singh, 2009), and anti-neurotoxic activities (Ju et al, 2010). In addition, Choi et al showed that 15-methoxypinusolidic acid from the plant exhibits anti-inflammatory activity in microglial cells (Choi et al, 2008) and Morishige et al reported that juniperonic acid, a polymethylene-interrupted (PMI) fatty acid which occurs in the plant, has an anti-proliferative activity on the bombesin-induced proliferation of Swiss 3T3 cells (Morishige et al, 2008). However, exactly how the plant mediates these anti-inflammatory effects is not yet completely understood.…”

“…This diacylglycerol was able to activate protein kinase C similarly to 1stearoyl-2-arachidonoyl-glycerol [58]. Sciadonic acid did not affect proliferation of Swiss 3T3 cells in response to bombesin, in contrast to the effects of juniperonic acid (all cis-5,11-14-17 20:4) and EPA which were both inhibitory [59]. This lack of effect of sciadonic acid may relate to the fact that its major diacylglycerol species has the same activity as the AA analog, while the diacylglycerol species of juniperonic acid and EPA may not.…”
