-The product. Coconut water (Cocos nucifera L.) is an ancient tropical beverage whose popularity on the international market has been continuously increasing in recent years. Uses. Besides its various traditional uses, this refreshing liquid extracted from the coconut fruit has recently been described as a "sport beverage" and has drawn the attention of manufacturers as a natural functional drink. Composition. Coconut water has a low matter content (2% to 5% wet basis), mainly comprising sugars and minerals. Quality criteria, such as the water per nut ratio, Total Soluble Solids (TSS), total sugar per nut, and [reducing sugars / total sugars] ratio, are good indicators for estimating the suitability of coconut cultivars for the production of coconut water. Regarding these criteria, dwarf varieties are the most suitable cultivars to obtain a tasty product. Properties. The quality of coconut water can not only be attributed to sugars and minerals because it also has a typical flavour and some original properties. Although many authors have cited medicinal uses or growth-promoting activities, only a few publications have clearly identified the components responsible for these properties. Discussion. Results of former and recent investigations are discussed. Finally, suggestions are made for further research to increase our knowledge of this original tropical juice. Résumé -Le produit. L'eau de coco (Cocos nucifera L.) est un ancien breuvage dont la popularité est grandissante sur le marché international des boissons. Usages. Au-delà de ses usages traditionnels, ce liquide rafraîchissant extrait de la noix a été décrit comme une « boisson de réhydratation pour sportif ». Des industriels ont ainsi mis en exergue ses propriétés fonctionnelles naturelles. Composition. L'eau de coco a une faible teneur en matière sèche (2 % à 5 % en base humide), constituée de sucres et minéraux. Des critères comme le poids de l'eau par noix, les solides solubles totaux, la quantité de sucres totaux par noix, le rapport [sucres réducteurs / sucres totaux] sont de bons indicateurs pour sélectionner les cultivars adaptés à la production d'eau de coco. Au regard de ces critères, les variétés naines sont souvent les mieux adaptées à la production de cette boisson. Propriétés. La qualité de l'eau de coco est aussi liée à une flaveur typique et recherchée ainsi qu'à certaines propriétés spéci-fiques. Bien que plusieurs auteurs aient attribué à l'eau de coco des propriétés médicinales et aient prouvé son effet positif sur la croissance des cellules, peu de publications identifient clairement les molécules responsables de ces actions. Discussion. Pour la première fois, les recherches sur l'eau de coco, des plus anciennes au plus récentes, sont synthétisées et conduisent à proposer des pistes pour améliorer notre connaissance de ce jus de fruit tropical atypique.

In the present study, the influence of subchronic effects of two plant growth regulators (PGRs) [Abcisic acid (ABA) and Gibberellic acid (GA 3 )] on antioxidant defense systems [reduced glutathione (GSH), glutathione reductase (GR), superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione-S-transferase (GST) and catalase (CAT)] and lipid peroxidation level (malondialdehyde ¼ MDA) in various tissues of the rat were investigated during treatment as a drinking water model. 75 ppm of ABA and GA 3 in drinking water were continuously administered orally to rats (Sprague-Dawley albino) ad libitum for 50 days. The PGRs treatments caused different effects on the antioxidant defense systems and MDA content of dosed rats compared to controls. The lipid peroxidation end product MDA significantly increased in the lungs, heart and kidney of rats treated with GA 3 without significant change in the spleen. ABA caused also a significant increase in MDA content in the spleen, lungs, heart and kidney. The GSH levels were significantly depleted in the spleen, lungs and stomach of rats treated with ABA without any change in the tissues of rats treated with GA 3 except the kidney where it increased. Antioxidant enzyme activities such as SOD significantly increased in the lungs and stomach and decreased in the spleen and heart tissues of rats treated with GA 3 . Meanwhile, SOD significantly decreased in the spleen, heart and kidney and increased in the lungs of rats treated with ABA. While CAT activity significantly decreased in the lungs of rats treated with GA 3 , a significant increase occurred in the heart of rats treated with both PGRs. On the other hand, the ancillary enzyme GR activity in the tissues were either significantly depleted or not changed with PGRs treatment. The drug metabolizing enzyme GST activity significantly decreased in the lungs of rats treated with ABA but increased in the stomach of rats treated with both PGRs.As a conclusion, the rats resisted oxidative stress via the antioxidant mechanism. But the antioxidant mechanism could not prevent the increases in lipid peroxidation in rat's tissues. This data, along with changes, suggests that PGRs produced substantial systemic organ toxicity in the spleen, lungs, stomach, heart and kidney during a 50-day period of subchronic exposure.

Objective-Inosine is a naturally occurring nucleoside degraded from adenosine. Recent studies have demonstrated that inosine has potent immunomodulatory and neuroprotective effects. In the present study, we further investigated the inhibitory effects of inosine on platelet activation in vitro and in vivo, as well as in attenuating middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO)-induced focal cerebral ischemia in rats. Methods and Results-Inosine concentration-dependently (0.5 to 6.0 mmol/L) inhibited platelet aggregation stimulated by agonists. Inosine (1.5 and 3.0 mmol/L) inhibited phosphoinositide breakdown, [Ca ϩ2 ]i, and TxA 2 formation in human platelets stimulated by collagen (1 g/mL). In addition, inosine (1.5 and 3.0 mmol/L) markedly increased levels of cyclic guanylate monophosphate (GMP) and cyclic GMP-induced vasodilator-stimulated phosphoprotein Ser 157 phosphorylation. Rapid phosphorylation of a platelet protein of molecular weight 47 000 (P47), a marker of protein kinase C activation, was triggered by collagen (1 g/mL). This phosphorylation was markedly inhibited by inosine (3.0 mmol/L). Inosine (1.5 and 3.0 mmol/L) markedly reduced hydroxyl radical in collagen (1 g/mL)-activated platelets. In in vivo studies, inosine (400 mg/kg) significantly prolonged the latency period of inducing platelet plug formation in mesenteric venules of mice, and administration of 2 doses (100 mg/kg) or a single dose (150 mg/kg) of inosine significantly attenuated MCAO-induced focal cerebral ischemia in rats. Conclusions-Platelet aggregation contributes significantly to MCAO-induced focal cerebral ischemia. The most important findings of this study suggest that inosine markedly inhibited platelet activation in vitro and in vivo, as well as cerebral ischemia. Thus, inosine treatment may represent a novel approach to lowering the risk of or improving function in thromboembolic-related disorders and ischemia-reperfusion brain injury.
