Inheritance of Polycystic Kidney Disease in Persian Cats

Abstract: Polycystic kidney disease in Persian cats culminates in chronic renal failure after a variable clinical course. An affected 6-year-old Persian cat was used to establish a colony of cats with polycystic kidney disease. In affected cats, cysts could be detected by ultrasonography as early as 7 weeks of age. Absence of cysts on ultrasound examination at 6 months of age was correlated with absence of polycystic kidney disease at necropsy. Both males and females were affected and, of progeny from affected x unaffec… Show more

“…Eighteen of these cats were Persian or Persian crossbred. Most cases of multiple renal cysts have been reported in Persian cats (1, 2,4,5,8,14,16,18,19), but the disease has also been reported in other breeds (3,17). A possible explanation for the high frequency of PKD in Persian cats in our investigation is the autosomal dominant inheritance of the disease which has been described for this breed (2,6).…”

“…The kidneys sometimes contain spherical or fusiform cysts but are most often normal structured (9,11). Polycystic kidney disease (PKD) in cats has been regularly described (1)(2)(3)(4)(5)(6)8,13,14,(16)(17)(18)(19). Persian cats are affected the most, and it has been shown that in this breed the disease is inherited as an autosomal dominant trait (6).…”

“…Briefly, somatic cellcytoplast complexes were transferred to a fusion chamber with two electrodes 500 μm apart, filled with fusion medium (0.3 M mannitol, 0.1 mM CaCl 2 , and 0.1 mM MgSO 4 and 0.05% fatty acid-free BSA) at room temperature. Cell fusion was induced with two DC pulses of 2.0 kV/cm 60µs, 0.1s apart delivered by a BTX Electrocell Manipulator 200 (BTX, San Diego, CA, USA).…”

“…They may also allow a recipient female for embryo transfer (ET) and recipient cytoplasm for nuclear transfer (NT) from several species of small wild cats [2,3] . Animal production by somatic cell nuclear transfer (SCNT) and interspecies somatic cell nuclear transfer (iSCNT) serves a sole tool for protection of precious individuals, genetically modified animals, conservation of endangered species and a number of opportunities for simple and practised research in human medicine [3][4][5] . Cats are often used to represent normal physiology and human diseases which are especially located in nervous system and kidneys in studies [4][5][6] .…”
