Inhalation of 30% nitrous oxide impairs people's learning without impairing people's judgments of what will be remembered.

Abstract: Many hypotheses have been proposed to account for the effects of nitrous oxide on memory, with one emerging possibility being that it has a global effect on memory-related functioning. This possibility was explored by examining the effects of nitrous oxide on memory performance and on the accuracy of people's judgments about their memory performance. Participants inhaled 30% nitrous oxide or a placebo gas while items were studied and while judgments were made about the likelihood of recall for each item. Next,… Show more

“…This model is supported by neuropsychological (e.g., Janowsky, Shimamura, & Squire, 1989;Shimamura & Squire, 1986) and psycho-pharmacological (e.g., Dunlosky et al, 1998) data, which highlight a dissociation between memory and metamemory. According to Nelson and Narens' model, through metamemory monitoring individuals create a meta-representation of the object-level (Nelson & Narens, 1990).…”

“…Another possibility is that they were measured in different types of behavioral tasks (pairs of word encoding and sentence completion, respectively). In the same vein, Dunlosky et al (1998) investigated how metamemory is affected by inhalation of N 2 O. This gas has been shown to produce a variety of effects, including analgesia and anxiolysis as well as memory impairments.…”

“…While these initial results are suggestive (cf. Dunlosky et al 1998), it is not necessarily the case that they will replicate with the much denser amnesia typically found in studies using intravenously administered midazolam (Hirshman et al 2001).…”
