Infrequent clinicopathological findings in 108 ameloblastomas

Abstract: One hundred and eight ameloblastomas diagnosed in a rural black Africa population were analysed for clinicopathologic findings other than those classically described. One patient had a polycystic ameloblastoma adjacent to an ameloblastic fibroma. Two other polycystic ameloblastomas showed aneurysmal bone cyst formation and one mandibular tumour was diagnosed as a keratoameloblastoma. Microscopic changes resembling an adenomatoid odontogenic tumour were present in association with two unicystic ameloblastomas a… Show more

“…Two cases of unicystic ameloblastoma associated with AOTs have been published by Raubenheimer et al [8]. These cases were not described in detail but formed part of a study, which demonstrated the varying differentiation potential of epithelium in the ameloblastoma.…”

“…For this reason, in the revised WHO Histological Typing of Odontogenic Tumors, odontogenic tumors are classified according to whether there is odontogenic epithelial, ectomesenchymal or epithelial-ectomesenchymal tissue participation 2) . The ameloblastoma is classified as an odontogenic epithelial neoplasm because of its putative origin from the enamel organ [2][3][4] . Hence the dominating histological feature in the conventional or classical ameloblastoma is an odontogenic tumor epithelium comprising a peripheral layer of polarized pre-ameloblast-like cells enclosing centrally, stellate reticulum-like cells, and these are disposed as islands and plexiform strands in a mature connective tissue stroma.…”

“…The remaining microscopical descriptions do not much differ from other reports [1,8,10,12]. There are squamous metaplasia and extensive cystic degeneration.…”

“…Furthermore, histologically AB is highly polymorphic and undergoes various forms of metaplasia (follicular, plexiform, acanthomatous, granulomatous, desmoplastic [3] and even containing unusual finding [4]. However, the occurrence of the mucous cells in AB is rare phenomenon, mucous cells have reported in about 9 cases [5][6][7][8][9][10][11][12]. This report describes a distinct case of long duration ameloblastoma in elder patient exhibiting numerous large pools of mucin and peripheral fibrous wall that make it well separated from the bone.…”
