Influence of Zirconium Percentage on Microhardness and Corrosion Resistance of Ti50 Ni50-xZrx Shape Memory Alloys

Abstract: To obtain high temperature shape memory alloys of the lower cost Ni-Ti-X system, elements such as Hf and Zr are introduced to modify the thermal and mechanical properties of these alloys. This work studied the production and characterization of Ti 50 Ni 50-x Zr x alloys (x = 0, 5, 10 at.%) with the aim of improving their thermal, mechanical and corrosion resistance properties. In the resulting alloys, transformation of phase B2 into phase B19' occurred in a single stage. The addition of zirconium led to an inc… Show more

“…For the Ni-Ti binary alloy, the martensite and austenite phases were identified. The coexistence of the austenite and martensite phases in diffractograms was also observed by other authors [21,26,35]. The monoclinic martensite phase (B19') was identified by comparing with the chart (2107170) in the planes (002), (−111), (020), (012), (022) and with chart (9015733) in the plane (011).…”

“…Due to the high cost associated with Pd, Pt, and Au, as alloying metals to NiTi, metals like hafnium (Hf) and zirconium (Zr) have been investigated to extend the commercial viability [88,89]. The composition Ni 50 .…”
