Influence of Treatment with Extracts of <i>Hypsyzigus marmoreus</i> Mushroom on Body Composition during Obesity Development in KK-Ay Mice

Abstract: Summary Hypsyzigus marmoreus (HM), an edible mushroom, has several effects, including antitumor, antioxidant and anti-allergy properties. On the other hand, the possibly useful effect of HM in diabetic mice has not as yet been elucidated. In this study, we showed treatment with a water soluble extract from HM (EHM) to reduce fat deposits without affecting body weight loss in KK-A y mice. EHM treatment also abolished the expressions of proinfl ammatory adipokines, such as tumor necrosis factor ␣ and monocyte ch… Show more

“…The production volume of Japanese mushrooms was recently estimated at about 440,000 tons per year, with Flammulina velutipes (Enokitake) produced in the largest quantities, followed by Hypsizygus marmoreus (Bunashimeji), Lentinus edodes (Shiitake), Grifola frondosa (Maitake) and Pleurotus eryngii (Eringi or King oyster mushroom) [ 5 ]. These mushrooms contain many nutritional components such as dietary fiber, vitamin B 1 , vitamin B 2 , niacin, vitamin B 6 , vitamin D and folic acid [ 3 ], and are reported to have anti-obesity effects [ 6 , 7 , 8 , 9 ], immunomodulatory effects [ 10 ], anti-tumor effects [ 11 ], anti-atherosclerotic effects [ 12 ] and anti-diabetes effects [ 13 ]. However, these studies do not take into account the quantity of mushrooms realistically consumed as part of the diet.…”

“…Obesity is a major worldwide health problem, and it has been implicated in the development of various diseases, such as diabetes, hyperlipidemia, and atherosclerosis. Extracts of Pleurotus Florida showed promising effects against obesity, their administration to high-cholesterol diet rats inhibits their weight gain, reduces total cholesterol level, LDL as well as triglycerides and also reduces fat deposition within the body of high-fat obese mice (Iuchi et al 2015). β-Glucan found in the extract of Pleurotus sajor-caju inhibits obesity in high-fat diet obese mice (Kanagasabapathy et al 2013).…”
