Influence of the Overall Intraocular Lens Diameter on Rotational Stability

Abstract: Purpose: To evaluate the rotational stability of two intraocular lenses (IOLs) of similar design and material but with a difference of 1 mm in overall length. Methods: In this prospective study patients with age-related cataract were included. An IOL with an overall diameter of 12 mm (ACR6 = small-diameter IOL) was compared to an IOL with an overall diameter of 13 mm (IDEA 613 XC = large-diameter IOL). Results: In total, 60 patients were included in this study. Absolute rotation in the small- and large-diamete… Show more

“…A lower overall diameter of 12.5 mm of the NY-60 IOL could explain these findings since the overall diameter seems to influence early rotation. A hydrophobic acrylic lens with a 12.0 mm diameter was found to have rotated slightly more than a 13.0 mm diameter lens in a study of 60 eyes 20. This is in accordance with the low rotation we observed in our study assessing true rotation of a 13.0 mm diameter IOL.…”

“…The AcrySof SN6AT and the Symfony ZXT are 13.0 mm diameter lenses designed with C-loop haptics, In contrast the FineVision POD FT is an 11.40 mm diameter lens designed with double C-loop 4-point-fixation. One should expect that due to the smaller diameter, a higher rate of rotation is expected 14 . The stability provided by the unique double C-loop haptics POD FT TIOLs design may compensate for the smaller diameter and explain our finding 15 .…”

“…Optic diameter of IOLs is almost standart due to this limitation. When total diameters are compared, average rotation and stabilization are similar in IOLs with 12 mm and 13 mm total diameters [11] . This parameter does not seem very important in IOL selection.…”
