Influence of Several Solutions Used in Bypass Surgery on the Permeability of the Endothelium of Carotid Arteries in New Zealand Rabbits

Abstract: Bretschneider's is the most suitable of the solutions studied as a graft storage medium in bypass and cardiothoracic surgery, but a solution causing even less damage is desireable.

“…Standard Ringer and Ringer Acetate are toxic to vascular endothelium and should not be used (38). Ringer Lactate is able to preserve endothelium-dependent relaxation for up to 2 h (38), but is as bad as saline regarding the preservation of cell morphology as studied by scanning electron microscopy (31), or regarding permeability disturbances occurring already after 20 min in endothelium exposed to saline or Ringer Lactate (44).…”

“…St. Thomas' solution, designed to depolarize the cardiac myocyte, does not preserve the vascular endothelium as well as UW or Perfadex (11,44,55,56) and should not be used for vascular graft preservation. UW has a very high concentration of potassium (140 mmol/l), it is a so-called "intracellular" solution (or high-potassium solution) in contrast to Perfadex, which is a low-potassium dextran solution (LPD solution).…”
