Influence of Session Context on Physical Activity Levels Among Russian Girls During a Summer Camp

Abstract: This study provides novel findings in a Russian setting, suggesting that a well-planned, organized camp session can elicit higher PA levels in girls, relative to a free-play session.

“…Previous literature characterizes the high levels of activity residential campers accrue on a daily basis, 15 so it is surprising that the campers in this study chose to engage in such high levels of vigorous activity after a long day. With previous research illustrating potentially lower levels of vigorous activity in structured activity sessions, 16,18,29 these findings lend support to camp directors continuing to allow free play activities and even consider expanding these opportunities. Future studies should determine whether expanding unstructured time or providing this time in the morning before activities influences campers' activity levels.…”

“…Previous literature indicates that summer camps can provide children with opportunities to be physically active. [15][16][17][18]29 However, less is known about how campers spend unstructured time, with early indications demonstrating the majority is spent sedentary. 18 What Does This Article Add?…”

“…Some recent interventions have been successful at increasing the percentage of time spent in MVPA by promoting efficiency and reducing the time that coaches spend managing youth behavior Guagliano, Lonsdale, Rosenkranz, Parker, et al, 2015;Pfeiffer & Wierenga, 2019;Weintraub et al, 2008). Youth development settings such as summer camps (Guagliano et al, 2017) and scouting (Jago et al, 2006;Rosenkranz et al, 2010;Rydell et al, 2005) have featured successful physical activity level increases within those settings, and usually have more room for MVPA improvement compared to youth sport or PE. The youth setting leaders within after-school programs, other out-of-school-hours care, youth sport, scouts, and camps are subject to similar influences, barriers, and facilitators to physical activity promotion as those of the teachers, described above.…”

“…The total valid wear time was 67.8 minutes (1:07 hour). Only one study used RCT design [197], and all other were cross-sectional [151,[198][199][200][201][202][203][204][205][206][207][208][209][210][211][212][213]. Actigraph was the lone accelerometer brand, and the most often used cut-points were Evenson (2008) [198-200, 204, 206, 208, 210], and Freedson (2005) [151, 201, 203-205, 207, 211, 213].…”
