Influence of phase I periodontal therapy on levels of matrix metalloproteinase 1 and tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinase 1

Abstract: We observed that as the extent of periodontal destruction increases, MMP-1 concentration increases and TIMP-1 concentration decreases in GCF. When chronic periodontitis patients were treated by scaling and root planing (SRP), the average MMP-1 concentrations decreased and TIMP-1 concentrations increased in GCF.

“…MMP‐1 is considered the prototype for all the interstitial collagenases and plays a key role in both physiological and pathological tissue remodeling (Vincenti and Brinckerhoff, ; Pardo and Selman, ). MMP‐1 has been implicated in periodontitis as recent studies showed that patients with periodontitis had a substantial elevation of MMP‐1 in GCF as compared to periodontally healthy subjects (Popat et al , ) and treatment of periodontitis with scaling and root planning was associated with a reduced MMP‐1 in GCF (Ghodpage et al , ). Furthermore, the importance of MMP‐1 in periodontitis was underscored by a recent meta‐analysis on the association between MMP‐1 polymorphism and periodontitis susceptibility (Li et al , ).…”

“…Therefore, the development of noninvasive diagnostic biomarkers for bladder malignancies is mandatory. [6] In the present study, blood and urine levels of MMP-2 and MMP-9, as well as TIMP-2 were assessed by western blot analysis and by realtime polymerase chain reaction (PCR) to measure expression levels of the proteins and genes, respectively. The extracellular matrix (ECM) is a major barrier to tissue invasion.…”
