Influence of pelvic osteotomy on birth canal size

Abstract: Six pelvic osteotomies (Salter, Sutherland, Steel, Tönnis, Chiari, and periacetabular) were performed on the right hemipelvis of adult female pelvic plastic models. Each pelvis underwent conventional X-ray and computed tomographic digital pelvimetry before and after osteotomy. The change in the anteroposterior and transverse dimensions at the inlet, midpelvis, and outlet were calculated. None of the osteotomies significantly decreased the inlet. The Salter and Sutherland osteotomies decreased the midpelvis to … Show more

“…In particular, the fragment without attachment to the scarospinous ligaments can be orientated medially, laterally and anteriorly so that the correction of deformity can be accomplished [34]. Additionally, future vaginal delivery is still safe for women of childbearing age because there is no change in the dimensions of the true pelvis when osteotomy is finished [35,36]. Finally, a capsulotomy can be carried out through the same approach to detect the labrum and articular cartilage damage without compromising the blood supply to the acetabulum [37].…”

“…Perhaps indicators such as hip dysplasia would offer further insight into physiology that influences or correlates with pelvic size and functional indicators of nutrition and health. Pelvic osteotomy for hip dysplasia does not apparently change the size of the birth canal (Loder et al, 1993), but factors associated with those presenting with hip dysplasia could be informative.…”
