Cross-linking of magnetic nanoparticles with proteins plays a significant role in the preparation of new materials for biotechnological applications. The aim was the maximization of the magnetic mass attracted and protein loading of magnetic iron oxide nanoparticles coated with chitosan, synthesized in a single step by alkaline precipitation. Chitosan-coated magnetite particles (Fe3O4@Chitosan) were cross-linked to a xylanase and a cellulase (Fe3O4@Chitosan@Proteins), showing a 93% of the magnetic saturation of the magnetite. X-ray diffraction pattern in composites corresponds to magnetite. Thermogravimetry and differential scanning calorimetry showed that 162 mg of chitosan was coating one gram of composite and 12 mg of protein was cross-linked to each gram of magnetic support. Cross-linking between enzymes and Fe3O4@Chitosan was confirmed by infrared spectroscopy with Fourier transform, X-ray energy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy dispersion analysis. From dynamic light scattering, transmission and electron microscopy the average particle size distribution was 230 nm and 430 nm for Fe3O4@Chitosan and Fe3O4@Chitosan@Proteins, showing agglomerates of individual spherical particles, with an average diameter of 8.5 nm and 10.8 nm, respectively. The preparation method plays a key role in determining the particle size and shape, size distribution, surface chemistry, and, therefore, the applications of the superparamagnetic nanoparticles.

Rapid absorption of wound exudate and prevention of wound infection are prerequisites for wound dressing to accelerate wound healing. In this study, a novel kind of promising wound dressing is developed by incorporating polyhexamethylene guanidine (PHMG)‐modified graphene oxide (mGO) into the poly(vinyl alcohol)/chitosan (PVA/CS) matrix, conferring the dressing the required mechanical properties, higher water vapor transmission rate (WVTR), less swelling time, improved antibacterial activity, and more cell proliferation compared to the PVA/CS film crosslinked by genipin. In vivo experiments indicate that the PVA/CS/mGO composite film can accelerate wound healing via enhancement of the re‐epithelialization. PVA/CS/mGO composite film with 0.5 wt% mGO sheets displays the best wound healing properties, as manifested by the 50% higher antibacterial rate compared to GO and the wound healing rate of the mouse using this dressing is about 41% faster than the control group and 31% faster than the pure PVA/CS dressing. The underlying mechanism of the accelerated wound healing properties may be a result of the improved antibacterial ability to eradicate pathogenic bacteria on the wound area and maintain an appropriate moist aseptic wound healing environment to accelerate re‐epithelialization. These findings suggest that this novel composite PVA/CS/mGO film may have promising applications in wound dressing.

Systemic antibiotic therapy is the main treatment for acute bacterial rhinosinusitis (ABRS). However, this treatment often causes side effects of dizziness, diarrhea, and drug resistance. In this study, a new polyethylene glycol hydrogel (PEG-H) treatment model is developed to achieve sustained release of drugs at the locality while avoiding those adverse effects. The PEG-H is composed of 4-arm-PEG-SH and silver ions through a high affinity and dynamic reversible coordination bond between the thiol and silver ion. In the initial test, PEG-H is loaded with Clarithromycin (CAM-Lips@Hydrogel) or Clarithromycin and Budesonide liposomes (CAM+BUD-Lips@Hydrogel). The results show that PEG-H maintains the characteristics of self-healing, biodegradability, moderate swelling rate, injectibility and sustained drug release. In in vivo studies, the hydrogel is injected into the maxillary sinus of ABRS rabbit models. In both a single or combined load, the hydrogel not only plays an effective role as an anti-bacterial, but also inhibits inflammatory response of local sinus mucosa. In addition, no other side effects are observed in the ABRS rabbit model through behavioral observation and drug sensitivity tests. Therefore, the injectable self-healing hydrogel with anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory properties provides a new micro invasive therapeutic method for the clinical treatment of ABRS.
