During the long-term service life of hydraulic structures, the calcium compounds in cement-based materials decompose in the aqueous environment, leading to the continuous change of seepage characteristics. To study the influence of calcium leaching on the concrete dam seepage characteristics, we proposed a new mathematic model of the cement-based material calcium leaching model under advection-diffusion-driven leaching. A solid-liquid nonequilibrium model is adopted to model the decomposition of calcium hydroxide (CH) and calcium silicate hydrate gel (C-S-H). To calculate the porosity more accurately, the proposed model takes the effect of different calcium compound decomposition on the porosity increase in consideration, respectively. Shimantan dam is selected for the three-dimensional (3D) calcium leaching analyses. The 3D finite element model of this dam is analyzed using COMSOL Multiphysics software that is based on the finite element method. Based on the proposed model, seepage characteristics evolutions of the Shimantan dam are studied. Good agreement between the numerical results and the monitored data indicates the accuracy of this simulation. The result shows that after 100 a leaching duration, the uplift pressure increases by 40.8%, and the leakage quantities of the dam body and foundation increase by 48 and 17 times. The rise of uplift pressure and leakage changes caused by curtain deterioration are the main influences of calcium leaching on the dam seepage. The parameter sensitivity results show that it is necessary to reduce CH content in cement-based materials to obtain better calcium leaching durability. This model and simulation results can guide the operation of concrete dams under advection-diffusion-driven leaching.

The mechanical properties of polymer impregnated concrete containing polypropylene fiber were statistically and experimentally examined in this study. Taguchi L9 (33) was used in this study. The variables used for experiments were selected as the polypropylene fiber ratio (0%, 1% and 2%), cement dosage (300, 350 and 400 kg/m3) and curing time (7, 14 and 28 days). After the specimens were cured at the specified curing times, they were dried at 105 ±5 °C. Then, the monomer was impregnated to the specimens for 24 hours under atmospheric conditions. The samples for the polymerization of monomer was kept within the drying oven at 60 °C for 6 hours. The compressive strength and ultrasonic pulse velocity tests of specimens, in which polymerization was applied, was conducted. Furthermore, the dynamic modulus of elasticity of samples was calculated using the ultrasonic pulse velocity. The Taguchi analysis found that the best values for the ultrasonic pulse velocity, dynamic modulus of elasticity and compressive strength were 28 days for curing, 1% for the polypropylene fiber percentage and 400 kg/m3 for the cement dosage. The Anova analysis found that the polypropylene fiber percentage had the biggest effect on the mechanical properties of polymer impregnated concrete containing polypropylene fiber.

Flexural-Fatigue Properties of Sustainable Pervious Concrete Pavement Material Containing Ground Tire Rubber and Silica Fume

With the development of urbanization, pervious concrete has been increasingly used in urban road pavement structures. The objective of this paper was to investigate the effect of stress levels and modifier (ground tire rubber and silica fume) on the fatigue life of pervious concrete and establish the fatigue equations with different survival probabilities. In order to improve the deformability of pervious concrete without sacrificing its strength, ground tire rubber and silica fume were added into pervious concrete. Two kinds of pervious concrete, control pervious concrete and ground tire rubber and silica fume modified pervious concrete, were made in the laboratory. The pervious concrete beam specimens of 100 × 100 × 400 mm were casted, and the static flexural strength and flexural strain of the two kinds of pervious concrete were tested. The fatigue lives of two pervious concretes were tested using MTS fatigue testing machine under four different stress levels (0.85, 0.80, 0.75, and 0.70). The fatigue life was analyzed by two-parameter Weibull distribution. The parameters of Weibull distribution were determined by graphical method, maximum likelihood method and moment method. The Kolmogorov–Smirnov test was used to test the Weibull distribution and the fatigue equations under different survival probabilities were established. The results showed that ground tire rubber and silica fume modified pervious concrete had better deformability while ensuring strength compared to control pervious concrete. The addition of ground tire rubber and silica fume improved the fatigue life of pervious concrete. The two-parameter Weibull distribution was suitable to characterize the fatigue characteristics and predict the fatigue life of pervious concrete. Fatigue equations with different survival probabilities were a good guide for pervious concrete design.
