Recycling waste tire rubber by incorporating it into concrete has become the preferred solution to dispose of waste tires. In this study, the effect of the volume content of crumb rubber and pretreatment methods on the performances of concrete was evaluated. Firstly, the fine aggregate and mixture were partly replaced by crumb rubber to produce crumb rubber concrete. Secondly, the mechanical and durability properties of crumb rubber concrete with different replacement forms and volume contents had been investigated. Finally, the crumb rubber after pretreatment by six modifiers was introduced into the concrete mixture. Corresponding tests were conducted to verify the effectiveness of pretreatment methods as compared to the concrete containing untreated crumb rubber. It was observed that the mechanical strength of crumb rubber concrete was reduced, while durability was improved with the increasing of crumb rubber content. 20% replacement of fine aggregate and 5% replacement of the total mixture exhibited acceptable properties for practical applications. In addition, the results indicated that the modifiers had a positive impact on the mechanical and durability properties of crumb rubber concrete. It avoided the disadvantage of crumb rubber concrete having lower strength and provides a reference for the production of modified crumb rubber concrete.

Pervious concrete (PC), as an environmental friendly material, can be very important in solving urban problems and mitigating the impact of climate change; i.e., flooding, urban heat island phenomena, and groundwater decline. The objective of this research is to evaluate the strength, permeability, and freeze-thaw durability of PC with different aggregate sizes, porosities, and water-binder ratios. The orthogonal experiment method is employed in the study and nine experiments are conducted. The compressive strength, flexural strength, permeability coefficient, porosity, density, and freeze-thaw durability of PC mixtures are tested. Range analysis and variance analysis are carried out to analyze the collected data and estimate the influence of aggregate size, porosity, and water-binder ratio on PC properties. The results indicate that porosity is the most important factor determining the properties of PC. High porosity results in better permeability, but negatively affects the mechanical strength and freeze-thaw durability. PC of 15% porosity can obtain high compressive strength in excess of 20 MPa and favorable freeze-thaw durability of 80 cycles without sacrificing excessive permeability. Aggregate size also has a significant effect on freeze-thaw durability and mechanical strength. Small aggregate size is advantageous for PC properties. PC with 4.75-9.5 mm coarse aggregate presents excellent freeze-thaw durability. The influence of the water-binder ratio on PC properties is not as significant as that of aggregate size and porosity. An optimal mix ratio is required to trade-off between permeability, mechanical strength, and freeze-thaw durability.functionally and environmentally friendly material [9]. Superpave gyratory compaction (SGC) and Marshall compaction methods are essentially designed according to volumetric properties. In spite of the similarity, the optimum asphalt contents (OAC) of the two methods are greatly affected by the laboratory compaction process, which would further influence their performance. This study aims to evaluate the performance of styrene-butadiene-styrene (SBS)-modified stone mastic asphalt (SMA) with basalt fiber by using SGC and Marshall compaction methods. Basalt fiber was proved to improve and strength the basic properties of SBS-asphalt according to test results of asphalt binder. The effects of SGC and Marshall compaction methods on OAC and volumetric properties, i.e., density, air voids (VA), voids in mineral aggregates (VMA), and voids filled with asphalt (VFA), were evaluated in detail. Finally, the pavement performance of asphalt mixture prepared by SGC and Marshall compaction methods were compared in order to analyze the high-temperature creep, low-temperature splitting, and moisture stability performance. Results showed that the OAC of SGC (~5.70%) was slightly lower than that of Marshall method (5.80%). Furthermore, the pavement performance of SGC specimens were improved to a certain extent compared with Marshall specimens, indicating that SGC has a better compaction effect and mechanical performance.

Due to the negative effects that derive from large impervious surfaces in urban areas, pervious concrete has been developed, and has become an environmentally friendly pavement material. As a porous and permeable material, pervious concrete presents an overwhelming advantage in solving urban problems, such as flooding, groundwater decline, urban heat island phenomena, etc. Waste crumb rubber has been verified as a feasible modifier for pavement material. The objective of this paper is to explore the effects of rubber particle size and incorporation level on the permeability, mechanical properties, and freeze–thaw resistance of pervious concrete. Two kinds of rubbers (fine and coarse) with four incorporation levels (2%, 4%, 6%, and 8%) are used in the experiment. Permeability, compressive strength, flexural strength, flexural strain, and freeze–thaw resistance are tested. The results indicate that the addition of rubber slightly decreases strength and permeability, but significantly enhances ductility and freeze-thaw resistance. Fine crumb rubber with a suitable incorporation level could remarkably improve the ductility and freeze–thaw resistance of pervious concrete without sacrificing excessively strength and permeability.

Changes of modal frequencies induced by temperature variation can be more obvious than those caused by structural damage, which will lead to the false damage identification results. Therefore, quantifying the temperature effect on modal frequencies is a critical step to eliminate its interference in damage detection. Due to the nonuniform and time-dependent characteristics of temperature distribution, it is insufficient to obtain the reliable relationships between temperatures and modal frequencies using temperatures in air or at surface. In this paper, correlations between measured temperatures (air temperature, surface temperature, mean temperature, etc.) and modal frequencies for the slab and beam are comparatively analyzed. And the quantitative models are constructed considering nonuniform temperature distribution. Firstly, the reinforced concrete slab and beam were constructed and placed outside the laboratory to be monitored. Secondly, the correlation coefficients between modal frequencies and three kinds of temperatures are calculated, respectively. Thirdly, simple linear regression models between mean temperature and modal frequencies are established for the slab and beam. Finally, five temperature variables are selected to construct the multiple linear regression models. Prediction results reveal that the proposed multiple linear regression models possess favorable accuracy to quantify the temperature effect on modal frequencies considering nonuniform temperature distribution.
