Influence of Genetic and Non-Genetic Risk Factors for Serum Uric Acid Levels and Hyperuricemia in Mexicans

Abstract: Risk of hyperuricemia is modified by genetic and environmental factors. Our aim was to identify factors associated with serum uric acid levels and hyperuricemia in Mexicans. A pilot Genome-wide association study GWAS was performed in a subgroup of participants (n = 411) from the Health Workers Cohort Study (HWCS). Single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) associated with serum uric acid levels were validated in all the HWCS participants (n = 1939) and replicated in independent children (n = 1080) and adult (n = 1… Show more

“…It was in line with some studies that MetS components of high BP, high BMI, diabetes mellitus and high triglycerides at baseline were related to increased risk of HUA [20,22]. In this study, 96.6% older adults were found having abnormal BP de ned as 130/85 mmHg or greater among individuals suffered from…”

“…Moreover, increasing number of MetS components at baseline was positively related to incident HUA though the presence of only one MetS component was not a signi cant predictor. The result that baseline MetS as a risk factor for incident HUA was not unexpected and was consistent with some studies carried out in other countries [13,14,20]. A cohort study in middle-aged men in South Korea demonstrated that the incidence of HUA increased across MetS at baseline with the hazard ratio of being 1.41 [13].…”

“…Hyperuricemia is the outcome of a combination of an endogenous purine metabolism disorder and an exogenous environmental disruption [37]. Recently, a trans-ancestry genome-wide association study, which included more than 450,000 individuals targeted at serum urate demonstrated that 183 loci were associated with gout [15].…”

“…Serum urate levels are influenced by genetic and environmental factors and the interrelation between these two [3]. The elimination of milk or other dairy products due to cow milk allergies might increase the risk for gout and hyperuricemia [4].…”
