Influence of a Wide Range of Calcium Intakes on Tissue Distribution of Macroelements and Microelements in Dairy Calves

Abstract: Sixteen intact male Holstein calves averaging 86 kg and 63 d of age were assigned randomly to four treatment groups. The four treatment diets contained .17, .67, 1.31, and 2.35% Ca on an as-fed basis. The resulting Ca:P ratios with P held constant at about .34% were .47:1, 1.92:1, 3.83:1, and 7.20:1. Calves were fed diets at 3% of their body weights for 4 wk. Magnesium in the bone ash and serum was lowered by the 2.35% Ca treatment. Serum inorganic P was also reduced by the highest Ca diet during the last 2 wk… Show more

“…Similarly as in the case of Mg, absorption of Cu in the small intestine was not large (Table 3). Loading with Ca did not significantly affect its distribution in the digestive tract or absorption, which has been reported in the works of Alfaro et al (1988) and Tucker et al (1988). McDowell (1992) reports that absorption of Cu in adult ruminants ranges from 1 to 3%, emphasizes its variability and the occurrence of numerous interactions with other dietary components such as phytins, Ca, Zn, Fe.…”

“…As the concentration of these elements in the diet rises, their specific antagonisms in terms of absorption and tissue distribution of other minerals becomes increasingly evident (Chicco et al, 1973;Bartley, 1976;NRC, 1980;Shiga and Harii, 1987;Alfaro et al, 1988). Antagonism between elements can lead to a deficit of many elements, especially those that normally occur in feeds at near-minimum levels (Underwood, 1977;Alfaro et al, 1988;Tucker et al, 1988).…”

“…Wise et al, 1963;Ricketts et al, 1970;Alfaro et al, 1988). According to Andrade et al (2002) the Ca to P ratio that provided better apparent absorption for the two mineral elements was 1.9:1.…”

“…A quantidade de Ca absorvida pelo animal está relacionada com ingestão de Ca, "status" de Ca do animal, idade do animal, quantidade requerida de Ca, fonte e fórmula química que o Ca ocorre na dieta, "status" de vitamina D do animal e inter-relação com outros elementos inorgânicos (McDOWELL et al 1983;REID et al, 1987;ALFARO et al, 1988;e NRC, 1989e NRC, e 1996.…”
