Influence of a new denture cleaning technique based on photolysis of H2O2 the mechanical properties and color change of acrylic denture base resin

Abstract: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the influence of a disinfection technique based on photolysis of H 2 O 2 on the mechanical properties and color change of acrylic denture base resin. Resin specimens were immersed in 1 M H 2 O 2 irradiated with light-emitting diode (LED) light at 400 nm for 1 week. The immersion duration of 1 week (168 h) corresponded to performing approximately 500 times of 20-min cleaning. Hydroxyl radicals are potent oxidants and they were generated via the photolysis of H 2 O 2 . O… Show more

“…Ideal denture care products should remove inorganic/organic deposits and stains; have costeffective, bactericidal, and fungicidal properties; and be easy to handle for the human health and harmless for the denture materials (12) .Various types of disinfectants were used in dental practice like glutaraldehyde, formaldehyde, sodium hypochlorite, hydrogen peroxide, chlorhexidine, vinegar and mixture of different chemicals (13)(14)(15) . Sodium hypochlorite solutions are very effective in various concentrations against microorganism; however, the concentration is a factor that should be considered to prevent any adverse effects on the materials of the prosthetic devices (16) .…”

“…Denture stomatitis, a common multi-factorial disease, can be caused by biofilm of denture surface owing to insufficient hygiene of oral cavity and dentures [ 1 ]. Candida associated denture stomatitis, also called chronic actrophic candidiasis, affects 11% to 67% of geriatric complete denture wearers [ 2 , 3 , 4 ].…”

“…Thus, the acrylic resin properties were retained after immersion in disinfectant solutions in the present study, for a period of time corresponding to the useful life of the dentures. Among various other aspects, such as occlusion and the condition of the patient's residual ridge, the properties of acrylic resin have a direct impact on the useful life of the denture, since adaptation and contamination are aspects that are relevant to longevity and are linked to the material's performance [15].…”
