“…A stress signal, the wounding, that accompanies excision of the tissue or the isolation of the cells is the first signal, perceived by cells destined to become somatic embryos in tissue cultures (36). the positive effect of abiotic stress to the process of somatic embryogenesis is recently reviewed and summarized by Zavattieri (49). Moreover many stress-related proteins are associated with somatic embryogenesis and differentially expressed between embryogenic and non-embryogenic cultures (12).…”

“…An elevated level of ROS imposes a real threat to cell integrity and functioning but on the other hand, ROS play an important role in the regulation of various physiological processes including growth, development, hormone signalling, defence reaction, and PCD (Mittler 2002;Mittler et al 2004;Rodrí-guez-Serrano et al 2012). Among others, the involvement of ROS as second messengers in somatic embryogenesis of many plants species has been revealed (reviewed by Zavattieri et al 2010). In the presented study, the evaluation of oxidative stress intensity and activity of antioxidative system revealed some interesting associations with ME initiated in triticale anther cultures.…”

“…For SE, during initiation proembryos start developing, followed by maturation during which storage products accumulate (for a review see ref. 4). A variety of factors including but not limited to species, explant source, and developmental stage impact upon competence for SE.…”
