Plant growth-promoting bacteria (PGPB) are beneficial microbes that increase plant growth and yield. However, limited information is currently available on PGPB in onion (Allium cepa Linn.). The aims of the present study were to isolate and identify PGPB in onion and examine the effects of isolated PGPB on germination and growth during the vegetative stage in onion, pak choy (Brassica chinensis), and sweet pepper (Capsicum annuum). Twenty-three strains of PGPB were isolated from the roots, bulbs, and rhizosphere soil of onion. All isolated bacterial strains showed one or more PGP traits, including indole acetic acid production, phosphate solubilization ability, and 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylate deaminase and nitrogenase activities; most of these traits were derived from Bacillus sp., Microbacterium sp., and Pseudomonas sp. Eight bacteria that exhibited strong abilities to produce indole acetic acid were selected for a Petri dish trial, soil pot test, and vermiculate pot test. The Petri dish trial showed that strains ORE8 and ORTB2 simultaneously increased radicle and hypocotyl lengths in onion, but inhibited growth in sweet pepper after 7 d. The soil pot experiment on onion revealed that strains ORE5, ORE8, and ORTB2 strongly promoted growth during the vegetative stage with only a half dose of chemical fertilizer. The present results indicate that ORE8 (Bacillus megaterium) and ORTB2 (Pantoea sp.) are the most promising biofertilizers of onion and may simultaneously inhibit the seedling growth of other plants.

Kopyor is a recessive-gene-trait coconut that has a delicious taste and high prices. One of several major problems of kopyor coconut cultivation is leaf spot disease. Endophytic bacteria originated from Arecaceae can be used as a biocontrol agents to control the disease in a sustainable way. The objective of the research was to select endophytic bacteria isolated from Arecaceae roots and leaves such as Pejibaye (Bactris gasipaes), Oil Palm (Elaeis guinensis), Kopyor Coconut (Cocos nucifera), Sugar Palm (Arenga pinnata) and Nibung (Oncosperma filamentosa) as biocontrol agent of Pestalotiopsis sp. Fourty isolates of endophyte bacteria are not pathogen to plant or animal and human. There are seven best selected endophytic isolates that can inhibit Pestalotiopsis sp. Some of them have the ability to dissolve phosphate, produce IAA, chitinase, and fix nitrogen. Those isolates are EAKSS 502, EAKSS 507, EAKSS 509, EAKSS 510, EAAPN 237, EAONN 545 and EAKPN 201. EAKPN 201 is the best candidate as biocontrol agent againts Pestalotiopsis sp. with 64,4% inhibition of Pestalotiopsis sp. on antagonist test. Bakteri endofitik yang berasal dari tanaman Arecaceae dapat digunakan sebagai agens pengendali hayati dalam mengendalikan penyakit secara berkelanjutan. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menseleksi bakteri endofit yang berasal dari akar dan daun tanaman Arecaceae seperti Pejibaye (Bactris gasipaes), Kelapa Sawit (Elaeis guinensis), Kopyor Coconut (Cocos nucifera), Aren (Arenga pinnata) dan Nibung (Oncosperma filamentosa) yang berfungsi sebagai agen biokontrol Pestalotiopsis sp. Empat puluh isolat bakteri endofit non patogen terhadap tumbuhan atau hewan dan manusia berhasil diperoleh. Tujuh isolat bakteri endofit memiliki daya penghambatan terbaik terhadap cendawan Pestalotiopsis sp. Beberapa isolat memiliki kemampuan dalam melarutkan fosfat, memproduksi IAA, kitinase dan mengikat nitrogen. Ketujuh isolat tersebut yaitu isolat EAKSS 502, EAKSS 507, EAKSS 509, EAKSS 510, EAAPN 237, EAONN 545 dan EAKPN 201 EAKPN 201 adalah kandidat terbaik sebagai agen biokontrol untuk Pestalotiopsis sp. dengan penghambatan sebesar 64,4% pada uji antagonis.[Kata kunci: Palem-paleman, patogen tanaman, antagonis, uji antibiosis]

In the last few years, a great emphasis has been placed on phytoremediation of indoor air pollution studies. However, limited work has been addressed to observe the bacteria potential to assist the phytoremediation process of trimethylamine (TMA). In this work, the ability of 4 different bacteria for TMA removal and IAA production were observed. Also, the enhancement of TMA removal efficiency by Euphorbia milii with various inoculating bacteria were investigated. Bacillus thuringiensis, Citrobacter amalonaticus Y19, Bacillus nealsonii, and white colony-soil bacteria (WCSB) were able to absorb TMA and produce IAA individually. B. thuringiensis and C. amalonaticus Y19 were the two most effective bacteria to improve TMA removal efficiency by the plant. Based on the highly correlation of bacterial IAA production with TMA removal efficiency by plants (in early periods of fumigation) and the highly correlation of bacterial IAA production with leaf IAA concentration of bacterially inoculated plants, two predicted mechanisms on improving TMA uptake are presented: (1) bacteria migration from plant roots to leaves increases leaf IAA concentration and (2) increasing concentration of bacterially inoculated root IAA inhibits transportation of IAA from leaves to roots, resulting in higher leaf IAA concentration. The concentration of leaf IAA is suggested to be a factor to increase stomatal opening which improves TMA removal efficiency of the plant.
