Individual accidents at the interface between platform, train and tracks (PT2I) in the subway: a literature review

Abstract: The subway context is a risky environment. Hundreds of individual incidents occur every year in this environment, entailing a safety issue for subway companies and safety organizations. This review deals with individual incidents at the platform-train-tracks interface (PT²I) with a particular focus on accidents and precursor analysis and on preventive measures. 42 articles ranging from 1984 to 2018 were selected and analysed to understand this issue. Our results suggest that the existing literature provides a … Show more

“…This type of impact could be prevented with additional policies focused on ensuring passengers stand clear of the platform edge while the train is approaching. For example, additional passenger education and employing personnel during peak times to ensure the platform edge remains clear may yield benefits (10)(11)(12). In relation to biomechanical modeling for future intervention design, scenarios involving pedestrians standing, lying, and jumping will all be important.…”

“…The platform-train interface (PTI) presents a number of potential hazards for station users, which can be exacerbated by their own behavior such as rushing [84]. Although such non-collision injuries have not been studied in Bangladesh, they have been investigated in both developed and developing countries such as the United Kingdom [84,85], Austria, Germany, USA, Chile, Mexico, Thailand, and so on [86,87]. An exhaustive list of studies involving PTI incidents are explored in Poirier et al (2021) [88].…”

An exhaustive list of studies involving PTI incidents are explored in Poirier et al (2021) [88]. It is alarming to find that boarding and alighting accounted for 6.3% of total UK passenger injuries in the 2019-2020 period [89].…”
